It was a great pleasure to present my paper about the effects of e-scooters on bicycle-sharing usage at the #ETC2023 conference in Milan. Exploiting a natural experiment, the entry of Lime to the Budapest market, the econometric method indicates that bicycle-sharing usage declined significantly, i.e., some commuters switched form bicycle to e-scooters. We also executed a survey with BKK - Budapesti Közlekedési Központ among bicycle-sharing users in Budapest, and only a limited number of the respondents changed to e-scooters permanently. These findings indicate that there is some competition between alternative transportation modes, but they can attract different commuters, too, helping more people to travel sustainably.

Grateful to IRSA203, organised by Eurailpress, for the opportunity to speak at last week's railway conference in Aachen on behalf of Arup. Together with Elisa Christin, we delved into the crucial topic of meaningful decarbonization within the transport sector and presented a paper co-written with my colleagues Heleni Pantelidou, Jörg Obergfell, Max Hemmerle, and Jessica Rempel, entitled: “The role of rail for decarbonized transport in a changing climate: Balancing capital carbon investment with carbon reduction from modal shift.” We hope to have effectively conveyed our key messages: ➡ A significant portion of the necessary transport infrastructure by 2050 is already in place and has locked-in high carbon behaviour. ➡ This means that most of the most of the carbon emitted in the built environment comes from user behaviour, highlighting the need for a systematic shift in our mobility patterns. ➡Opting for a mode of transportation should revolve around selecting the most efficient option at the network level. ➡Decarbonizing assets in isolation proves neither efficient nor fast enough for achieving meaningful decarbonization; we need to adopt a larger system-thinking. ➡ While substantial investments are being made in the sector, there's still work to be done beyond merely quantifying carbon. Emphasizing carbon management in the decision-making processes of every project is essential, prompting a reevaluation of the approach to project delivery. Arup actively engages in diverse frameworks and projects committed to the decarbonization of the transport sector, and continues to challenge conventional transport planning methods.
