Google DeepMind is known for developing the first AI-powered robot to achieve amateur human-level performance in table tennis. This robot combines low-level skills like returning the ball with high-level skills such as strategizing and long-term planning. The robot was trained using a dataset of initial table tennis ball states and competed against 29 human opponents of varying skill levels, demonstrating its ability to perform complex tasks requiring physical skill, perception, and strategic decision-making. https://lnkd.in/ebuKSyiP

Have you ever played AI Table Tennis? Let’s be real, table tennis is just BORING without AI 🥱 but if we sprinkle in some data collection and LLMs, it gets a LOT more interesting. Here’s how it works: The technology is all in the paddles: they track forehand hits, backhand hits, swing speed, and even ball speed. They also provide a lose interpretation of where the ball lands on the table. And just like that— we have our data collection that we can use to generate a game commentary. The data is then input into @IBM’s watsonx LLMs which can create a game storyline in 3 different prompts or tones: constructive, professional, and dramatic. You can only imagine the difference in the way the game is summarized based on these 3 prompt options! Within each tone choice, you can also adjust the temperature setting of the model to decide how much it should stick to a given prompt. A high temperature makes the output less random and more “on par” with the chosen prompt and a low temperature provides more room for randomness and diversity. Isn’t this the coolest thing ever?! watsonx is calling the shots 🎾 This may look like your average game of table tennis, but behind the scenes watsonx is capturing data-driven insights (average swing speed, total forehands and backhands, etc.) This data is used to provide AI-generated commentary for the match: “In a thrilling table tennis match, Ashwin clinched victory over Bridget with a score of 5-3. Despite similar average ball speeds, Ashwin’s superior average swing speed if 7.54mph vs Bridget’s 6.54 mph gave him the edge.” You can see some of this technology in action at the US Open and Wimbledon, where IBM Match Insights combines AI and millions of data points to provide player insights and predictions to fans.
