🔹 Differential Sticking in Oil & Gas Drilling: Causes, Solutions & Chandler Engineering's Role 🔹 Differential sticking can be a costly challenge in drilling operations, caused when the drill pipe or bottom-hole assembly becomes stuck due to pressure differences between the drilling fluid and formation. Here’s a quick look at the main causes and preventive measures: Causes: 1.) Excessive Overbalance Pressure - High mud pressure can press the drill pipe against permeable formations. 2.) Permeable Formations - Fluid loss into sands or fractures can create pressure imbalances. 3.) Prolonged Static Conditions - Stationary pipe in overbalance situations increases sticking risk. 4.) High Mud Weight - Heavy fluids can cause pressure imbalances. 5.) Poor Hole Cleaning - Insufficient cuttings removal can lead to pipe burial. 6.) Thick Mud Cake - Built-up mud cake can trap the pipe. 7.) Wellbore Instability - Collapses or sloughing increase resistance to pipe movement. Preventive Measures: 1.) Control mud weight to manage overbalance. 2.) Keep the drill string moving in permeable zones. 3.) Use low-filtrate-loss fluids to prevent thick mud cake buildup. 4.)
