Is it your customers that let you know when your carrier(s) fails to process tendered freight on time? If so, there's a very easy, old-fashioned way for you to learn about missed trailers/trucks/pallets before your customers tell you.....and it's a way to get the outbound team engaged a bit more in the process, and helps raise the sense of urgency all-around. IT IS SO SIMPLE - record two or three tracking numbers from the first few that go into a trailer, truck, or pallet. Make sure the trailer number, truck number, or pallet ID is also recorded. (I don't like belt or conveyor confirmations, as the package still has a chance to NOT make the outbound vehicle) Then............assign a person(s) to track these the morning after they were picked up from your facility..............if there is an origin scan, all is good.......if there is no origin scan, you likely have a miss by the carrier........... BUT...........you can specifically identify what trailer/truck/pallet was missed..................... AND............this is MUCH BETTER than telling the carrier that you see 400 labels created from the previous day with no origin scan.........because you can provide specifics. (IF YOU WANT TO BE REALLY GOOD, AND POSSIBLY SAVE A MISS FROM OCCURING, THEN DO THIS...have someone on the team track the packages at the end of the injection's site sort finish time....if you identify that there is a miss at that time, the carrier may still have a rescue option to still meet the palnned TNT)

Carriers need better communication to develop relationships with brokers and sometimes direct customers. If a broker or customer has all the info on their freight—its location, the drive ETA to shipper/receiver, proper check calls, reefer temperature updates, and on-time pickup/drop—why would they switch to another carrier? Why were FAKs so common in the early 2000’s but not something we see as frequently today? In present times, carriers give out FAKs less and less, and so many variables are factored into whether they give one or not. Packaging, stowability, value, and overall commodity mix play major factors in this setting. If you are able to secure an FAK in present times, expect to see a less aggressive discount on transportation to go along with it. Throw in some accessorial reductions requests to go with it and expect one or the other but likely not both unless the carrier is super hungry for that specific freight.
