Oh, companies. You're breaking my editorial heart with these remote job ads that end with, basically, "We can't hire you if you live in Alaska or Hawaii and so on." Do potential skilled and dedicated employees a solid and open those payroll doors to the whole country. You'll be glad you did. You're missing out on some talented hires. (Also, my plan is to start a job while living here but then move back home to the NYC area later this summer. Yes, after 25 years as a freelance writer, editor, and audio maker, I'm ready to focus all my work attention on your publication or podcast or other wordy bits. More on that in another post. The other day, a potential employer posted a job ad seeking writers. Following my application, they eventually sent me the trial work after some back and forth. It has ‘simple’ requirements: 1. Write a 500-750 word thought-leadership article on [their chosen topic] and it’s state in 2024 2. Objective: Focus on predicting changes in [topic] strategies for 2024 3. Research Thoroughly: Dive deep into recent SaaS industry developments, technological advancements, and expert insights relevant to 2024 4. Diverse Viewpoints: Include varied perspectives, encompassing both technology and user experiences. Consider the impact on different stakeholders. 5. Offer practical strategies or steps SaaS companies can take, based on your findings. 6. Summarize key insights and end with a forward-looking statement or question about the future of SaaS product adoption. 7. Deadline: 4 days Compensation for the work? “You will be compensated.” I responded with an explanation, saying that: 1. 750 words cannot adequately cover this. 2. Given that thought leaders are unpredictable, a deadline of four days is excessively strict. 3. Specific compensation needs to be stated. Get what they said? ***crickets** Everyone, be careful out there. While many are posting job openings, not many are actually hiring.

Hi LinkedIn community, This post is a stand against legit slavery. I’ve been looking for a job since more than a month. I’ve applied to more than 200 jobs and have been rejected from almost 100 and ghosted by the remaining. I just came across the following job for a full-time content editor (screenshot attached). The company not only wants a resume but also a video to showcase the candidate’s skill sets. And please check the pay. I mean is it for real? The company’s offering $1,000–$1,400 per month. Is this a joke? We don’t even get a den with a shared bathroom in $1,400 in Toronto! And you know what’s the sad part: 58 people have already applied to it because they just want employment. It feels like companies know that there are a zillion jobless people out there who’ll do anything to get work. But do businesses realize that exploiting an educated person’s time and skills is unethical. Yes, organizations need to create more jobs for people but definitely not at the cost of salaries. Wake up, hiring employers. This is appalling! #salaries #jobs #disappointing

One of our clients was having trouble backfilling technical writer positions. Every time a writer resigned, went on PTO, or straight up didn’t show up to work, those were lost hours. Which, if you know anything about technical writing, means products can’t be shipped and sales cycles grind to a halt. So these stoppages translated directly to lost revenue. Then Brightwing stepped in. Because of our extensive talent network, we were able to keep these positions filled—and give new technical writers a shot they otherwise may not have received. After nine years of working with the same writers, the client decided to hire them. Now, that wouldn’t have happened had either the client or writers been squeamish about a contract agreement. So don’t dismiss a contract role out of hand—even if your ultimate goal is a permanent placement. Because you never know how one opportunity could change the course of your career for the better. Recruiters, hiring managers, and companies. If you advertise a content writer position, specify if you're open to international or country-specific writers (or if it's in-house or remote position). It doesn't make sense to get people to apply for a position only to tell them you are not accepting international or remote writers. It's a waste of time for both of us. Also provide a way for people to apply. Applying for a job shouldn't be like doing an exam where one needs to figure out things. It should be a straightforward process. Better yet, state your offer rate in the job post.

After 2 months building a remote team, I've realised that: 1. experience isn't a reflection of quality of output 2. many carry titles they're not qualified for 3. a good team culture matters 4. work ethic is important 5. age is just a number. Just the other day I saw a job opening on Glassdoor… They were looking for a writer with hip-hop knowledge and some experience in the same. Now, the benefits package they advertised was pretty darn sweet, I'm not gonna lie. But then I saw the deal-breaker - they wanted an 800-word writing sample! 😲 Naturally, I reached out and politely asked if there would be any compensation for putting together such a meaty sample. Their response? A 'no.' 🚫 At that point, I had to respectfully decline. As much as I would've loved that gig, spending hours writing a lengthy sample for free just didn't feel right, you know? 💸 This made me wonder if the recruitment system is broken. There is NO problem with Career Gaps. I often see recruiters abstaining from hiring people with career gaps. Yes, the industry changes every now and then. People NEED to keep up. But again, people are adaptable. They CAN learn. Being married and raising a family is awesome. Had an amazing time, but I wanted to work.
