National Work Zone Awareness Week kicks off next week and this year’s theme is "Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.” What many fail to recognize is that the vast majority of people killed in work zone crashes are motorists and their passengers. In 2021, 778 drivers and their passengers died in work zones (based on NHTSA FARS data), making it all the more important for drivers to slow down and stay focused while approaching and passing through a roadway work zone. OK, I BROKE THE LAW, AND I DIDN'T CARE. Well, that is what you would or could believe based on my actions if you saw me driving the other day. The truth is that speeding comes so easily. As drivers, we tend to hit the gas when we are excited, stressed, or reckless. After reading this article today, I had an epiphany that speed is too often linked to our emotional state. This doesn't make it ok, but thank you to IBTTA for sharing this because I am humbled, and I think we should all slow down and put our emotions in check. When you stop and think about your own frame of mind; what could be your top five (5) reasons you are typically speeding? I would humbly suggest it is because you are either... • late and stressed out. • excited and like the thrill or feeling of the acceleration. • chasing down another driver that wronged you. • running from the police. • rushing to the hospital. All of these reasons are because you are emotionally in a bad frame of mind, and even worse, you don't care and aren't thinking rationally. I'm not trying to make you feel bad, but I am saying that perhaps we need to plan a little better or take a deep breath; maybe we could prioritize each other as drivers. Think of our passengers and our families because that is ultimately who will pay the price when it goes bad. The next time you are on the road, please don't gamble with others' lives and play at stakes you can't cover when you lose. #transportation #think Toll Talk Podcast #tolltalk
#IBTTA is proud to support National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA's annual speeding prevention campaign, Speeding Catches Up with You. In 2022, more than 5.9 million crashes were reported to police. During our Global Road Safety Week, NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman emphasized, “Behind every number is a person.” IBTTA’s #BeSafeTogether campaign serves as a reminder that the little things add up. Running late is never an excuse. Slow down. Stay focused. It can save a life. @Forbes #roadsafety #speeding https://lnkd.in/ezWJxWqR
