📅 World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is celebrated every 17 June to raise awareness of various international initiatives to combat these phenomena. ⚠ Desertification and drought, are some of the environmental challenges of our time, which are a degradation of environmental health and contribute to the collapse of biodiversity. 🌎 Currently, 40% of the land surface is considered degraded according to the United Nations Is it possible to change this situation? We´re very happy to say YES ✅ These are some of the ways to change the situation: 👉 AFFORESTATION: The use of various scientific and technological approaches and equipment to produce and manage forested areas where they did not previously exist. 👉 ARTIFICIAL SOIL: Tailor-made artificial soils can sequester carbon from CO2 in both organic and inorganic form, and stock large amounts over time. These two methods are being tested with the Project C-SINK Project because they´re CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal) technologies If you want to know more about the project 👉 https://lnkd.in/dqUdk4UR #CDR #environment #Afforestation #ArtificialSoil #CarbonDioxideRemoval

#LAMASUS_EU is excited to share key insights from the second Stakeholder Board Workshop that was held in March 2024! Simon Kay from DG CLIMA presented the challenges and complexities associated with EU land use policies in the context of climate change mitigation and adaptation. His presentation covered anticipated changes in land use as the EU progresses towards climate neutrality, outlining the potential hurdles ahead. Simon provided an overview of the anticipated carbon sink for various sectors by 2040. He emphasized the interconnectedness of climate, biodiversity, and land use policies, highlighting the necessity of robust monitoring to understand their interdependencies. Furthermore, he introduced upcoming policy tools, such as the Climate Target Plan, LULUCF, Carbon Removal Certification Framework, and the proposal for a Monitoring Framework for resilient European forests. Again, there is a need for monitoring to check compliance with these targets. LAMASUS stakeholders raised concerns, including the heightened bureaucracy for farmers, and different policy objectives hampering clarity and flexibility. Questions were raised regarding why agroforestry is not counted towards carbon removal, the role of wood as a construction material, and the role of satellite monitoring systems to measure carbon potential. Simon addressed these issues by highlighting the importance of agriculture in carbon sequestration and discussing potential policy approaches. He emphasized the need for balanced policies that consider both climate goals and nature conservation, while also acknowledging the importance of protecting individual farms and minimising bureaucratic burdens. 🌳Delivering comprehensive, high quality and verifiable GHG inventory, carbon footprint calculation and reduction plans, compliant with principles of GHG Protocol. 🌳 Net Zero roadmaps
Blue carbon is the term for carbon captured by the world’s oceans and coastal ecosystems, such as saltmarshes, mangroves and kelp forests. Oceans and coasts provide a natural system of carbon dioxide regulation through sequestration and storage. There is evidence that these ecosystems, although often smaller in size than terrestrial forests, sequester carbon at a much faster rate and, if left undisturbed, continue to store it. They also, simultaneously, provide us with a range of other benefits, such as protection from erosion, biodiversity preservation, food and pollution regulation. Investing in coastal habitat restoration, while beneficial in so many ways, offers diversification of carbon offsets. UK Saltmarsh Carbon Code is looking to enable UK saltmarsh carbon capture to be quantified, marketed and traded as carbon offsets, providing future financing and offering assurance to buyers that the benefits they invested in are permanent and real. https://lnkd.in/eJEe5bmk

Source: Marine environmental research Microplastics (MPs) threaten seagrass beds, vital coastal blue carbon ecosystems for carbon storage and climate change mitigation. This review highlights five impacts of MPs on carbon sequestration: (1) MPs add organic carbon pollution; (2) they affect seagrass and algae growth; (3) they influence microorganisms and greenhouse gas production; (4) they alter sediment quality and decomposition; (5) they have complex effects based on MP behavior. The review calls for multidisciplinary research and conservation efforts to enhance seagrass carbon sequestration.

💧 Water regulation will be key in the fight against climate change. 🌍 At the water panel of the fifth Biodiversity, Carbon, and Water Forum, held as part of the #ChileCarbonForum, key advancements were shared: 🌱 BioCarbon Standard: By the end of 2024, they will launch a pioneering standard for certifying net gains in water regulation and footprint reduction, with three innovative methodologies for water management on private lands. 🌊 Aguas Andinas: They are implementing nature-based solutions in the Maipo River Basin, using infiltration ditches and green infrastructure to control floods and erosion. Additionally, the possibility of bringing the concept of water credits to the forum in #Ecuador in November was discussed. Projects like these will shape the future of water sustainability! #NatureBasedSolutions #WaterCredits #HydricFootprint

Hello, Climate Fellows! Indigenous people live according to prevailing indigenous rules, which direct the community to establish sustainability with nature. One example of such rules is the classification of customary forests. Indigenous people have local wisdom in respecting forests, which are primarily considered sacred. This local wisdom has a concrete effect in controlling forest use and no deforestation. This is what the Farmers for Forest Fund (4F) program seeks to optimize. The 4F program provides incentives and benefits to communities to conserve forests without converting forests into productive land. Check out the infographic above to see how the local wisdom of indigenous peoples is being used to conserve forests. And don't forget to explore the content in the journal using the link at the end of the slide! #Agriculture #SustainableAgricultutre #SmallholderOilPalm #Smallholder #TRADEHub #TRADEHubIndonesia #ClimateFinance #IndigenousPeople #NatureConservation
