We are accustomed to thinking that Europe is more socialist, while the US is more liberal. But the reality of certain industries contradicts this belief. For example, in the US, 99% of major airports are owned by the government – either the federal government, state governments, or municipalities (for example, John F. Kennedy International Airport is owned by the municipality of New York City). In Europe, the situation is the opposite – only 25% of airports are government-owned. In Russia, too, a significant portion of airports is owned by private businesses. Major airports in the US remain in public ownership because they are recognized as natural monopolies and essential elements of the country's transportation infrastructure, ensuring national security. Moreover, airports in America are exempt from taxes, and the profits earned are reinvested in the development of the airports themselves. 🛫🏛️ #AirportOwnership #GovernmentOwnership #TransportationInfrastructure #NationalSecurity

Dillon Shah of Simple Flying interviewed me about the ambitious Single European Sky project of the European Commission. My main #takeaways : ✈️ It is a challenging political project to align 27 countries and #ANSPs. However, every year, small steps are taken to enhance the efficiency of the routes as this could generate significant savings on flight operating costs and #co2emissions. ✈️ EUROCONTROL already plays a vital role as conductor of a 41-member-strong orchestra in enhancing coordination, cooperation, performance and efficiency. ✈️ Although some gains could be achieved by merging several ANSPs, it looks like a political "mission impossible" and even undesirable. Our research (2019) demonstrated economies of #density but very limited economies of #scale. These results do not support a solid economic rationale for more consolidation between European ANSPs. See our published paper (https://lnkd.in/eANCXaSg c/a Sven Buyle). ✈️ #Belgium, #Luxemburg, the #Netherlands and the North-West of #Germany set up Eurocontrol MUAC in the 70ies to control the upper airspace. Still, the project was never extended to other countries due to limited political appetite, but maybe it was missing economic rationale, too. ✈️ More gains can be achieved by boosting the #technology and connecting the different ANSPs and the military airspace. In addition, more intra-ANSP #competition could be introduced at a later stage, leading to further #costefficiency and #consolidation, where applicable.
