Tesla set a company record by deploying 9.4 GWh of energy storage in the second quarter of 2024, more than doubling its largest previous quarterly deployment. The 9.4 GWh value was 131% greater than the previous quarter, and #157% greater than the volume deployed in Q2’2023. The company’s energy storage deployment in first two quarters of 2024 is equal to just over 91% of the entirety of the capacity deployed in 2023 – with the second quarter alone equal to almost 64% of 2023’s total deployment capacity.

A few days ago I put up a Linkedin post about Tesla doing the most in the sector, but that their earnings were forecast to drop. Lo and behold, Tesla's Q2 pointed to -7% YoY for their automotive business. A hectic figure considering they are THE e-mobility leader. During an investor's call, 'ole Elon said this was only an issue in the short term, calling it a "bit of a hangover" considering that other competition has brought EV pricing down significantly. In short, price point competitivity = more competition = less Tesla's being sold. BUT. Tesla's storage is BOOMING. Will this be a portfolio shift? [KH Explains] [Will LG Energy Solution be Tesla's 4680 battery crisis savior?] Four years after Tesla revealed the hyped Cybertruck, its production still lags with 1.9 million orders pending. The bottleneck stems from challenges in mass-producing what are known as 4680 battery cells, which are key to the Cybertruck’s success due to their superior energy density and cost efficiency. Currently, Tesla can only produce a fraction -- only a tenth -- of the required output, pushing it to lean on global battery manufacturers. LG Energy Solution, a leading South Korean battery manufacturer and a key supplier to Tesla, seems to be in a prime position to capitalize on this demand. However, the technical complexity and innovation required for mass production of these cells means it is still uncertain which manufacturer will lead in this area. What are 4680 battery cells, and why are they important? The 4680 battery's name comes from its dimensions: 46 millimeters in diameter and 80 millimeters in height. These cells are crucial for larger electric vehicles, like the Cybertruck, which require substantial, high-density batteries for a reasonable range. Tesla asserts these batteries can deliver up to five times the energy and six times the power of previous models while also cutting manufacturing costs by half. Which maker could capitalize on Tesla's hurdle? Why is scaling up 4680 battery production so difficult? Why are manufacturers betting big on 4680 battery tech? Tesla's pricing for a 1.9 MW/3.9 MWh Megapack is currently listed at $1,039,290, which equates to $266/kWh. This price does not include installation or delivery and requires a $1,000 deposit to secure the order. In April 2023, the price of the same hardware was $1,879,840, at a rate of $482/kWh. The price has decreased approximately 44% during the 14-month period. This price reduction aligns with a general market trend that has seen energy storage cell costs in China drop from between $110 and $130/kWh to near $50/kWh. #Tesla set a company record by deploying 9.4GWh of energy storage in the second quarter of 2024, more than doubling its largest previous quarterly deployment. It takes quite a bit of accurate and reliable dispensing equipment to support the production of the electronics in each Megapack, in particular with the TIM material.
