Ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on Sept. 10, we'd like to take moment to highlight the importance of mental health within our communities. Last year during our Vital Signs research, we found "Improving Mental Health Services for Substance Use and Suicide Prevention" to be one of the emerging focus areas. Funding for the programs that provide support to those struggling with mental health, suicide, and addictions can be hard to come by. And yet, organizations are seeing an increase in the demand of these same programs. This is why funds held at the Community Foundation like the Vital Community Fund, the Johnny Z Healthy Minds Fund, and the You Matter Foundation Fund are so important. They help to bridge this funding gap experienced by charities. Did you wake up today and feel like life is just not worth living? Well, I hope not. But just for a moment as you read that question, you might have glimpsed an insight into the dark world that many people suffering from mental health disorders can face on a daily basis. And unlike the physical health ups and downs that we all experience as a normal part of life, untreated mental health issues can spread like its inky blackness to all corners of a person's life for many years. There are many noble causes to champion, but it is the invisible and life long suffering that I have seen in good people with mental health issues that really concerns me, and especially young people in the complex world we have created for them to live in. I'd like to ask you to help me do something about it. This year is my fourth year leading a team of Port Melbourne legends in the Push Up Challenge. It's a simple thing (sort of). We each do one push up for every life lost to suicide last year over 24 days, and ask you to donate to the cause. Unfortunately that means each of us needs to do 3,249 push-ups, but we will get there! To donate go to my challenge page: https://lnkd.in/gpNeD8DP And of course, you will get a receipt to claim as your donation is tax deductible. My donations are going to Headspace. Even if you don't donate, thanks for reading this far and spending a moment focusing on mental health. Perhaps you know someone to ask RUOK.

👉 Marking World Suicide Prevention Day 👈 Mental health is something we are all acutely aware of at CCL and awareness of, and support for well-being initiatives is high across the business. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and with more than 700,000 people dying each year due to suicide, we wanted to do our bit, raising funds for the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) charity. And we’re doing it with CAKE - what else? CALM is fantastic. In 2021, they launched the 'Stay' campaign on this day to tell anyone and everyone who can't see a way out: “Things can change”. To say to them “Just stay”. It can be really hard knowing what the right thing is to say to someone who is feeling suicidal and CALM have got loads of tools and resources to help people find the support they need, including a life-saving helpline for people who can’t see a way forward, have lost someone to suicide, or are worried about their friends or loved ones. £12.20 is enough to fund one potentially life-saving call. Our cake sale is raising funds here but you can donate online: https://lnkd.in/emUWkpMg

Here’s a quick comparison: Version 1: Subject Line: Support Our Mental Health Initiatives Opening Line: Dear Supporter, Your donation is needed to help us provide mental health support to young people across the country. Every pound counts - please donate to make a difference. Version 2: Subject Line: Help a Teen Like Jake Find Hope Opening Line: Hi [Name], At just 15, Jake was struggling with anxiety so severe that he couldn’t attend school. Hey, brainiacs! I'm taking part in the push up challenge for Mental Health. Here are some funny reasons why you should donate to this awesome cause: 1) Because life is hard and people need help to cope 2) Brains are squishy and mushy, but science shows you can reshape them no matter how old you get. 3) Working out keeps me sane, so I won't freak out at you 4) It's the biggest fundraising event for mental health in Australia 5) Stick one to the man and get some money back for doing good! The Push for Better Foundation is a legit charity in Australia and you can claim your donation on your taxes. (ABN 49645093349) 6) I also put my money where my mouth is, so you know it's good stuff.
