Two years ago, I connected with my good friend Leonard Stiegeler to explore potential ventures. After taking a year off post the sale of UCOOK, I had been involved in several projects, spanning skincare, and payments—but nothing had truly reignited my passion for building. I was looking for something that operated at the intersection of commercial scale and positive impact. I wanted my daily efforts to mean something—not just for me, but for the broader community. At the time, Meesho, a social commerce startup in India, was booming, and their success story was inspiring. They had just crossed $4B in sales and were creating opportunities for 12 million people in India. We saw similarities in the South African market and believed the model could work here. This led to a much deeper exploration of the social commerce model, with some analysis and conversations with operators who scaled in townships. We eventually raised a substantial pre-seed round and launched to market. But the next 12 months were some of the hardest in my life. Nothing worked. Our founding team disbanded. The platform we developed was for a customer who didn’t need it. Despite the hard work, we were left with almost nothing to show for it, and we burned through $1.5M. On a personal level, everything suffered. My relationships, friendships, and my own mental health collapsed as I struggled with constant stress and failure. The imposter syndrome was overwhelming, and at times, I thought I wasn't cut out for this. Failure had never been something I could easily accept. But I had to acknowledge that the idea wasn’t working. So we pivoted..... twice, and the embarrassment of those failures was intense. It took every ounce of perseverance not to give up. That journey brought me to FARO, venture number three. I can say, with certainty, that FARO has been on fire since day one, surpassing all expectations. I am deeply grateful to the incredible people who have stuck with me through this journey: Amber Penney, my co-founder and rock always; William McCarren my new co-founder / Co-ceo and fast becoming close friend; and Chris Makhanya, our spiritual leader and cultural anchor at FARO, who brings with him 20 years of executive experience in our field. Needles to say without the constant reassurance of Leonard Stiegeler and the unwavering support of tech leaders like Mato Perić, & Fabian Hansen we wouldn’t have made it through. FARO is now a mission-driven business focused on creating value for shareholders, the environment, and society. This journey, filled with failures and lessons, has come full circle. And now, we’re building the next unicorn from Africa, operating at the intersection of commercial scale and positive impact.
