An EM 2023 priority has been met ahead of schedule with crews recently placing the last piece of structural steel on the 60,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC). The facility is being constructed on the University of South Carolina Aiken campus and is expected to be completed by June 2025. The AMC will provide accessible, modern and flexible laboratory space for Savannah River National Laboratory and its collaboration partners and serve to combine the unique capabilities of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories, industrial enterprises and educational institutions to drive practical, cost-effective solutions to many of the nation’s most challenging environmental cleanup and energy security challenges while supporting long-term sustainability of the United States manufacturing sector. Tyree Mitchell, PhD, Associate Professor at SHLRD, and Changwon Son, PhD, CSP, Assistant Professor of Industrial, Manufacturing & Systems Engineering at Texas Tech University, will serve as co-principal investigators on a grant totaling $855,760 to conduct groundbreaking research titled "Empowering and Enhancing Offshore Workers’ SWA, UWA, Reporting Unsafe Conditions, and Employee Participation." The project seeks to address challenges faced by offshore workers in implementing critical safety protocols by investigating the effects of leadership and organizational factors that contribute to offshore energy workers’ perceptions that they are empowered to and safe to stop work when they notice conditions are unsafe. 🎓 Grateful for the insights gained at the Florence School of Regulation during their Executive Course on European Hydrogen Legislation 🎓 A few key takeaways after the fantastic two-day intensive session: Sustainable Transformation Imperative: The EU's stringent targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions is ambitious and the sheer volume of hydrogen required to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors will rely heavily on importation and hydrogen carriers such as ammonia to satisfy our EU decarbonisation needs. Navigating Regulatory Complexity: The complex regulatory landscape, Renewable Energy Directive, RefuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime, to classifications like RFNBOs and RCFs, require clear comprehension with timely establishment at member state level. This is essential to provide a stable framework upon which financial investment decisions can be taken. Seizing Opportunities Amidst Challenges: Despite challenges such as cost differentials between grey and green hydrogen and regulatory uncertainties, there are opportunities to leverage EU subsidies and support frameworks to offset initial investment costs and incentivize sustainable practices. By strategically navigating these challenges together as producers, import infrastructure providers such as Vopak and offtakers we can capitalize on the ample opportunities available within the sustainable energy landscape, driving both economic growth and environmental stewardship.

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) will be among those represented during the Energy Exchange set for March 26-28 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The event, hosted by the Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program, works to ensure the federal energy and water community is better connected to deploy technical, operational and institutional practices and solutions to achieve net-zero emissions in federal operations. Energy Exchange is the largest training event and tradeshow for the federal energy and water management community. ERDC’s Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) will have a booth in the event’s exhibit hall – booth 605 – and team members will be on hand to share information about CERL’s innovative research. Nigeria really needs to "intentionally" invest in manufacturing, production and infrastructural development. That is the only way we would build this nation and optimize the skills of engineers in this nation. We are not ready to build this nation unless we intentionally invest some more in STEM. Many Engineers are underpaid in this country, and I think NSE should really do something about this.
