The Victoria-Saanich Citizens’ Assembly (VSCA) on Municipal Amalgamation held its first meeting on Sept 21. The Victoria-Saanich Citizens’ Assembly (VSCA) on Municipal Amalgamation is preparing to convene its first of eight meetings. Forty-eight randomly selected residents of Saanich and Victoria will represent all residents of these municipalities on the Assembly, which is tasked with exploring the costs, benefits and disadvantages of amalgamation between the two municipalities and issuing a report to their councils. Much like a jury or task force, the deliberations of a Citizens’ Assembly are generally confidential and closed to the public. It assesses how well the requirements of the Convention are put into practice by state parties. GREVIO, the Group of Experts, monitors the situation in the countries through visits and draws up reports evaluating the implementation of the Convention. Did you know that NGOs play a key role in this process? NGOs and civil society are strategic partners in the implementation of the Istanbul Convention on national level. #Day1ofBarConferenceKumasi2024 Memorable in my opinion for two reasons: Powerful valedictory speech delivered by outgoing bar prez Yaw Acheampong Boafo Esq and the turnout. My key takeaways from the Bar Prez speech: 1. Enough of the games...Let's stop the pretence as a nation and fish out the real persons behind the galamsey menace. 2. The National Identification Authority (NIA) has the data to assist the nation to identify those who can pay, so the Free SHS can focus on the needy. 3. Reform going forward aimed at reducing per head conference fee by decoupling the actual conference cost from incidental fun and entertaining events. #GBA #BarConference2024
