It has come a few weeks late perhaps, but I wanted to collect words to describe my last 8-month experience at ADNOC Crude Flexibility Project as a Commissioning Engineer in Abu Dhabi, UAE. A big thank you to my managers Harit Naik & harry bruggink for giving me this wonderful opportunity to learn, exercise and grow my core Process Engineering skills through this assignment.
In working to commission and start-up an Atmospheric Residue Desulphurization (ARDS) Unit as a part of the ADNOC Ruwais Refinery, I grew my experience in a range of activities such as-
1. Unit Start-up / Shut down
2. Hydrogen Network and H2 compressors
3. Detailed troubleshooting of Reciprocating Compressors
4. Commissioning of several equipment (reactors, pumps, compressors, furnaces, distillation/separation columns etc)
5. Chemical Injection systems
6. Stream sampling, analysis and troubleshooting
7. Performance Guarantee Tests and reports
8. Troubleshooting Analyzers
9. Troubleshooting process abnormalities, instrument failures, heat losses, utility systems etc
10. Safety walks and Line walks
11. Technology Licensor interaction
12. Client interaction
I am grateful that I got this opportunity early in my career, that has added immense value to my professional portfolio. Along with growing strong technical expertise, I have developed several perspectives to diagnose and troubleshoot real engineering problems. I have grown not only strong process engineering skills, but I have learnt a lot of engineering lessons from all other disciplines- mechanical, instrumentation, electrical, piping, civil, safety, project controls etc. I have grown a temperament to understand the problems in-depth for appropriate diagnosis and solutions. It has also made me confident to work on a likewise refinery unit if further opportunities come up.
Overall, this experience has brought a huge growth in my approach towards analytical thinking, the details in work and in my professional communication skills. I strongly urge all the design engineers to have an enriching on-site experience for themselves! I would definitely be looking forward to more of such assignments in future.
