Tittle: Paying Homage to Tristin Kate Smith, February 21, 1995 - August, 2023 Author of "A letter to my Abuser" As we observe International Nurses Week this year, I feel compelled to acknowledge the numerous nurses who have endured abuse from their employers, and especially those who had the courage to stand up against their abusers. Since reading Tristin Kate Smith's letter to her abusers, I have been deeply troubled. I cannot find peace, knowing that employers, associations, and laws have continued to exploit and mistreat nurses. When I reflect on Tristin's story, I am overcome with empathy for the immense pain her family must be experiencing, and I question what unforgivable transgression she committed as a dedicated nurse serving humanity, that led to her untimely demise. I hold myself, as well as all nurses globally and our professional associations, accountable for not providing the necessary support to our own. The lack of unity that has plagued our profession has ultimately benefited our detractors. We must rise up, stand together, and demand the respect, dignity, and fair treatment that we deserve as healthcare professionals. Its sad to see how we have rapidly forgotten about her.. Tristin's story is tragic
