I love supporting other photographers because I know what it's like to be flustered on the job; needing to switch lenses (where'd I put my camera bag down?!), direct subject matter, and touch base with client all at the same time. Being a photographer helps me be a better photo assist, and being a photo assist helps me be a better photographer. I see how other creatives operate (so that's how she nails the alpenglow exposure!), interact with their subject matter, and deliver what the client needs. I can let the photographer go full creative brain, and keep track of the things I wish I didn't have to when I'm playing my one woman band. (It's getting dark soon, did you still want to put the drone up?) Then I put the photog hat back on, and I go practice communication with my crew. I try new strategies to encourage my team to work as a team, because I just learned some new things to say to my assist that really help them do their job better. It's a spiral of self improvement, and we usually make some pretty cool stuff along the way.
