This #WorldHumanitarianDay, the #IPU acknowledges that violations of the #GenevaConvention continue to occur around the world, adding to the suffering of people caught up in the brutality of #war. As #MPs ratify international treaties, they are well-placed to drive change and oversee whether conventions are effectively applied. MPs can ensure that the rules of #IHL are understood, and perpetrators are brought to justice. More efforts should be devoted in strengthening mechanisms of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) worldwide. 🌎 Synergies may be built through track-two diplomacy activities and by putting more emphasis on the role of non-state actors in fragile and conflict-affected settings for protecting civilians from the atrocities of war. For instance, businesses in post-conflict contexts can contribute to building peace by creating a sense of community and advocating for human rights policies. I recommend reading the article, “Don’t forget the Geneva Conventions: achieving responsible business conduct in conflict-affected areas through adherence to international humanitarian law”, and sharing the recent post by the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC on the importance of international actors for respecting and enhancing principles of IHL.
