MISA engages SADC CSOs and stakeholders in the operationalisation of regional Non-State Actors’ mechanism MISA participated in the SADC Non-State Actors Forum Engagement Meeting held on 11 and 12 August, 2024 in Harare. The meeting sought to operationalise the SADC Non-State Actors Engagement Mechanism. The meeting brought together the SADC Secretariat, the Southern African Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (SAf-CNGO), NGOs working in the region, and development partners. MISA believes the forum is a crucial platform for the region, as it is a bridge between the SADC Member States and the region’s citizens. It is worth noting that the forum prioritises learning from other regional institutions, such as the East African Civil Society Forum and the West African Civil Society Forum. Yesterday, I had the privilege of discussing the groundbreaking bilateral deal on gender-based violence with Alan Neal on All in A Day. Here's a snapshot of what we know: 💰 $162 million allocated over four years in Ontario alone. 🌐 Five pillars guiding the agreement: Support for survivors, prevention, a responsive justice system, Indigenous-led approaches, and social infrastructure. 🎯 The Plan's Ambition: Engage all Canadians in reshaping social norms, attitudes, and behaviors contributing to GBV. It also addresses social and economic factors to enhance health, social, economic, and justice outcomes for those impacted. During the interview, crucial questions emerged on how this funding will tangibly break down systemic barriers for survivors. I hope the province and the feds can also consider long-term funding for the sector beyond the initial four years, addressing the sustainability of critical programs and initiatives. The urgency is clear, especially considering that over 70 municipalities in Ontario have declared IPV an epidemic, while the province has not. I remain hopeful that this collaboration between the federal and provincial governments is a significant step forward and will be, keeping a pulse on how this funding translates into meaningful action. https://lnkd.in/eq6jz7Ri

🌍 In response to the UN Independent Expert on international solidarity’s report on civil society organizations engaging in international solidarity, IFEX’s submission highlighted the challenges faced by activists due to rising authoritarianism and repressive actions, underscoring the critical role of civil society in advocating for human rights accountability. Drawing on IFEX members' experiences, the submission reveals how repressive legislation and barriers to participation in high-level spaces at the UN have targeted and obstructed the work of civil society organizations (CSOs). IFEX’s networked approach, combining collaborative advocacy, operational support, access to resources, and other expressions of solidarity, strengthens the capacity of organisations to effectively counter authoritarian regimes and defend civic space. The latest Indigenous Justice Strategy What We Learned Report summarizes the unique challenges and opportunities faced by regions across Canada and identifies actionable priorities to improve justice outcomes for Indigenous people. https://lnkd.in/gqXyR_6c Engagement on the Indigenous Justice Strategy allows the Government of Canada to develop a culturally appropriate strategy informed by the lived experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis, and Indigenous ways of knowing and healing that includes concrete recommendations to address systemic discrimination and the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in Canada’s justice system. So far, development of the Strategy has been shaped by discussions with over 1400 Indigenous people representing Indigenous Nations and communities, grassroots organizations, members of the judiciary, policing, and municipal, provincial/territorial, and federal governments.
