Ever wonder which pushing technique during labor is best for both mom and baby?
Two primary methods: open glottis and closed glottis pushing.
Closed Glottis Pushing (Valsalva Technique): In this traditional method, the mother takes a deep breath, holds it, and bears down for about 10 seconds during contractions. This is repeated two to three times per contraction. While it can be effective in speeding up labor, it may reduce blood flow and oxygen to both mother and baby, potentially leading to quicker maternal fatigue and higher risk of perineal injury.
Open Glottis Pushing: This more natural approach encourages the mother to push while exhaling, with shorter, spontaneous pushes lasting 6-8 seconds. This technique supports better oxygenation and can be less exhausting, promoting smoother labor and reducing the risk of perineal trauma.
I’ve mostly seen closed glottis pushing in practice and am very interested to know the successes other nurses have seen with open glottis pushing.
❓Fellow labor and delivery nurses, I’m curious: which technique do you prefer in your practice, and why? Share your experiences and opinions on both methods. Let’s learn from each other to provide the best care for our patients!
