Taking it Personally: Results of the Largest Privacy Study Every Conducted The largest privacy study ever conducted has revealed that a large majority of consumers are very concerned about how their personal information is being collected and used. The results run counter to the conventional wisdom that consumers have become jaded and are no longer particularly concerned about privacy. More than 45,000 Americans over the age of 25 responded to the Publishers Clearing House study. Additional findings include: - While 86% of those surveyed are concerned about data privacy and security, only a fraction feel well-informed about how their personal information is being used. - Most participants believe that almost all their data is personal, including exercise and TV viewing habits. - Almost two-thirds of survey respondents say both government and businesses should be responsible for data privacy and security. No Such Thing as Privacy on a Postcard. In an era of digital footprints and the omnipresent surveillance of today, the communication landscape earlier was completely different. Especially for us, the postcard was more than just a piece of paper; it was a window to the world, a medium for sharing experiences without a second thought about privacy. This transparency was accepted, if not embraced, as a part of the process. It was a time when sharing snippets of one's life with the world was not seen as an invasion of privacy but rather a casual exchange. I still remember in the early 2000s I used colour/ sketch pens to make it colorful and post to my clients, postcards helped a lot connecting clients and the loved ones at a very minimal price. The excitement of sending and receiving a postcard with its colorful images / handwritten messages was unparalleled. It's a world away from today's obsession with data protection and online privacy. The postcard era was a simpler time, when communication was as open as the sky. Ofcourse there were inland covers but it was slightly priced , so I pick postcards over inland covers to communicate. To do this, they purchased smartphone location data, including Advertising Identifiers (AdIDs) from data brokers that had been harvested from a wide range of apps.” “The issue is that if an agency — any agency — can ignore the laws surrounding privacy, then the only way to preserve privacy is to ensure the data doesn’t exist in the first place. This is bad for individuals and for business users. If governments feel they can ignore their own laws, then no one can be certain their data or information is safe.
