I engaged in a fascinating discussion with Nupoor Rajkumar from Noora Health and Juneza Niyazi the author of Navigating Service Design. Here are my key takeaways : 💡 The word "service" though accurate, can be limiting when it comes to the scope of Service Design. If you're thinking your gig will be a cakewalk in a design-savvy organization, think again. Assuming that a more defined role is achievable in a design mature organization may be misguided. Perhaps, that's not even what we should be chasing. Juneza hit the nail by calling it a mindset and a value system. Sure, some things you create will be visible and appreciated and seeked by those around you, but there's always room for finding gaps and connecting dots to make your customers smile even wider. 💼 Selling our worth to stakeholders and actors can feel like an uphill battle. Nupoor's secret sauce? It's all about doing and showing. Starting small, iterating on the fly, and not dragging projects on for ages before sizing up the impact. Breaking down problem statements into measurable metrics and keeping a tab from the get go. 🔎 Another significant part of the game is handing off the service design lens to others - your actors to encourage them to understand, learn and co-create with the users. 🎢 Reflecting on where your organization or project stands and understanding your spot in the Service Designer's life cycle journey is key. Service designers often get called in during the discovery stage, and as the project unfolds, the role morphs. Knowing when to pass the baton to other stakeholders and when to grab it back is critical. 🌱 Funny enough, Nupoor’s seen that those who haven't done the whole formal study thing tend to be the go-getters. Meeting people where they're at is essential. “Blank Slate” is the vibe. 💣 Nupoor dropped the wisdom bomb that labels are overrated; just keep evolving. As long as you're rocking those service design glasses, the label could be anything. So, there you have it—some real talk with a side of service design wisdom. Here's how we design to improve health outcomes. We design for dignity. When people are surrounded by environments that create anxiety, feel foreign and sterile, or deprive them of dignity, they are less empowered to work on their recovery. To support faster and smoother patient recoveries, we need to improve the patient experience. Here are a few design considerations for fostering dignity: ➡ A sense of welcome. Focus on the initial 60 seconds of the user experience. Create a space that anyone would feel proud to enter. ➡ The power of choice. For example, flexible lighting that patients can control. ➡ Unobtrusive safety. For example, clear pathways of visibility for observation and engagement. ➡ Nature as medicine. Incorporate biophilic elements and provide outdoor spaces that patients can visit freely. “Whatever you’re doing, the space you’re doing it in can make your task easier or harder,” notes Angela Mazzi, FAIA, FACHA, EDAC, who recently served as a keynote panelist at the International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Health Care. “Architects are dot connectors,” she says. “We make the connections between the things an organization wants to accomplish, and the way space can make those goals easier to achieve. Whether it’s operational efficiency, user experience, or equity goals, the design can provide resources that amplify those goals. LOOKING FOR YOUR NEXT READ? 📖 Whether you're just starting your journey in health design or are an experienced practitioner, these are my top three. 1. 'Healing Spaces' by Esther Sternberg M.D. Seriously, just start here. If you’re not familiar with Esther Sternberg yet, watch her TEDx Talk. And then immediately pick up this book. If you’ve been in the field for a while, she gives context for some of the landmark studies in the health design field, so even if you think you know the story of Roger Ulrich’s “View Through a Window,” you still have more to learn. 2. 'Health Design Thinking' by Bon Ku and Ellen Lupton. If you’re just diving into health design, this book will teach you some engagement strategies to use with clients… and the case studies will get you totally inspired! If you're an experienced practitioner, it’s always great to have more user-group activities up your sleeve. Take some cues from these design thinking methods for your next stakeholder workshop! 3. 'The Equity Mindset' by Ifeoma Ike, Esq. Health design is equitable design. Sure, it’s great to learn about design strategies and methods… but a holistic health designer has also engaged in the deep work. Use this opportunity to reflect on your biases, create safer places, and challenge the DEI status quo. Narrowing it down to three was a CHALLENGE. Which books should make the next roundup? https://lnkd.in/guBY7EYM

I'm excited to announce my co-authorship with Mariana Amatullo, PhD Amatullo on a chapter for "Design and COVID-19", curated by Rachel Cooper and Louise Mullagh. Our piece, "Here to Stay: Design-led Recovery from COVID-19 in New York", dives into how design has played a pivotal role in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by the pandemic in New York City. A big thank you to Mariana Amatullo, PhD for inviting me to join this project. It's been a unique opportunity to reflect on and contribute to the critical discourse on design's impact during these unprecedented times. Our chapter, alongside the rich contributions from various authors, examines the transformative power of design in crisis recovery and resilience building. Through a focus on innovative case studies, we explore the importance of inclusive and participatory design practices, especially in a socially distanced world. I'm grateful for the guidance and support from Rachel Cooper and Louise Mullagh, whose editorial expertise has been instrumental in bringing this anthology to life. Their work has created a platform for sharing diverse perspectives on design's role in addressing global challenges. I invite you to check out our chapter and the book (link in the comments sections below) for insights into how design can lead the way in crisis recovery and beyond. It's a testament to the collective effort and creativity of the design community in times of need. Thanks to everyone involved in this project for their hard work and dedication. Here's to continuing the conversation on design's capacity for positive change. #participation #participatorydesign #socialinnovation #covid19
