Wishing all Americans a blessed Independence Day. If it has been a while since you read the Declaration of Independence, let me encourage you that there is no better day than today to fix that. It would only take you 3-5 minutes, but it would be the best 3-5 minutes of your day. The Declaration lays out the philosophical basis and justification for the Constitution (a document many of us have taken an oath, perhaps many times, to defend, possibly at the cost of our lives.) Those two documents form a coherent whole. The Declaration itself lays out the "Who/What/Why", and the Constitution build on that with "How". I hope you noted that those are 4 of the 6 elements of a good report - "Whiskey Five Hotel" (W5H - who, what, where, when, why, and how.) Have a blessed (and safe) day!

Yesterday, I had the privilege of hearing the Irish Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and Defence Minister Micheál Martin, speak at the Hertie School. I was able to ask him about the security situation in Northern Ireland and, following the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, how he sees the country changing in the future. His answer was very insightful: 1. Brexit's biggest challenge to the Good Friday Agreement is not a possible reinvigoration of paramilitary groups but rather the real threat to the institutions that keep Northern Ireland together. 2. A lasting peace requires putting people first👨👧👦: The Irish and British governments are investing €1 billion until 2030 in the 'Shared Island Initiative' to encourage individual cross-border relationships and reconciliation using art, infrastructure and more. 3. Peace requires consistent work🏋️♀️: The peace process is not static but needs all groups' constant attention and investment. He commended the EU for their work to maintain peacebuilding as a constant theme. 4. Reforming Stormont🏛: The emergence of the centre ground in Northern Ireland requires a new approach to the governance mechanisms; namely, the removal of the veto. Institutions must evolve with the changing landscape. Overall, it was a message of hope. While recognising the serious challenge brought about by Brexit, Martin made it clear that it is not insurmountable. Peace and stability will prevail if all actors stay committed.🕊

Happy July 2nd! This is actually the day on which the United States became independent. The Second Continental Congress passed a resolution establishing independence that was moved by Richard Henry Lee. It read in part: “Resolved, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.” Another part of the resolution directed that a Declaration of Independence be issued. #july2 #1776 #independenceday #RichardHenryLee #DeclarationofIndependence #july4
