From August 2020: I have to ask why I do not have a full-time teaching position yet, is it... -because there are quotas and districts must interview a percentage of candidates outside of the immediate area/district with no intent of hiring such individuals? -because hiring is based on budget not on the right candidate for the job: educated, experienced, and certified -because recruiting is not done, only hiring over the summer months hence little to no time for interviews, spouse notice at his/her employment, student record transfer, home search, moving, etc -because of my age? -because I am not originally from here or there? -because I did not graduate from the school district? -because I am not related to anyone in the district? -because of the amount of experience I have? -because of the number of certifications I have? -because I am a 2nd career educator? -because I am a parent? -because I care too much? -because I continue to seek out learning? -because I advocate for better? -because I grew up in central Troy (8th street)? -and because I believe in equity for all children? Why?

Nation Hahn and his folks at EdNC do great work keeping us informed about what's going on in the NC Community College System. Recently, something in their newsletter, Awake58, struck a chord. (Link in the comments). Nation reported that South Carolina community colleges now use the term "working learners" instead of "adult learners". This is an interesting perspective shift. Or maybe not so much a change in perspective as a better way to name what we know--that virtually every community college student has important responsibilities outside of class. It points us directly to the issue, as opposed to using an age-level term as a proxy for that issue. I have worked for several decades in this field and I have learned to be honest with myself--sometimes my students' other responsibilities are more important that school. Yes, sometimes the other people in a student's life are more important than ME. When a student is struggling, I have learned to ask, "Is this a good time for you to be trying to do school". I ask with as open a mind and heart as I can, conveying as best I can that I will not judge them or have my feelings hurt by their response. I say, "To everything there is a season . . . " and other such things. Sometimes the answer is a sigh of relief and a "no, it really is not a good time, let's rethink my schedule". Most of the time it's "yes, I think I can do it if I can only get some support". Then, I've really got something to work with. I have the best job. For transitioning teachers… Teaching children and adolescents is a lot like working with college kids, except with 1000x more legal requirements, ramifications and stressors. For hiring managers and recruiters… If you are interviewing a transitioning teacher, consider the fact that those candidates likely have more experience than anyone at your company mitigating and assessing risk, project managing to limit even the near appearance of impropriety, and, simultaneously, actually caring about stakeholders (students and their families.)
