We have a 3 month free trial for UK GP practices and would be interested to work abroad, too!   AUTOMATING THE MANAGEMENT OF HYPERTENSION Using the Optimise BP clinician interface, the clinician selects the medication suitable for that patient and the rate of titration. Through the Optimise BP Patient app, Optimise BP guides the patient through their hypertension treatment plan. The app reminds people when to take their BP, asks about side-effects and reminds the patient about blood tests when needed. When safe to do so, Optimise BP asks the patient to increase their treatment, as initially directed by the clinician, until BP is below the individualised treatment target. We estimate a saving of 44% of time taken to manage hypertension.   EFFICIENT BP SCREENING. The practice can contact cohorts of patients, asking them to record their BP. Optimise BP enables QOF-coded filing of patient-recorded normal BPs into EMIS or TPP, using the desktop bar. Then the practice can use Optimise BP to focus on people with higher BPs for further review or treatment.

(By skype) The effects of severe hurricanes and heat waves have grabbed headlines for years. However, the devastation wreaked by hurricane Katrina in August 2005, and the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Al Gore and the International Panel on Climate Control in October 2007 have transformed the public perception of natural disasters and extreme weather conditions. Climate change is no longer an issue for professional journals and specialists; it is now covered in the popular press and evening news broadcasts. Nonetheless much remains to be done to help the general public and policy makers understand the linkages the headline grabbers and also to assist developing countries prepare for climate change. In fact, indirect effects of climate change can be far more significant than those of headline grabbers. Hurricane damage to coastal cities is the most immediate aspect that comes to mind, but the risks go well beyond that. Heat waves, droughts, cold spells, increases in natural and man-made pollution, resurgence of diseases like malaria and dengue fever, epidemics of cholera, erosion, floods, cyclones and typhoons, landslides, rising sea level, salinization, wildfires, and windstorms all come into play For example, the longer term effects that settle in shortly after an extreme event range from respiratory disease due to lack of housing, to malnutrition from disruption of food supply and unemployment, to mental and physical stress of displaced persons, to diarrhea stemming from compromised water supply and sanitation, to suicides when despair sets in. In today's world, given the pattern of diseases in developing countries, solutions to health problems lie, in large part, to areas outside the purview of the health sector, with a major role to be played by infrastructure, i.e., water supply, sanitation, waste disposal, housing, transportation, and household energy supply.
