One of the missing pieces to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 is grid-scale energy storage, which is precisely what we are tackling in our partnership with Energy Vault. As CNN reports, tall buildings are SOM’s specialty, which creates “an opportunity to take this expertise … and use it for energy storage, enabling us to wean ourselves [off] fossil fuels," said Bill Baker, SOM consulting partner and structural engineer of the Burj Khalifa. Our design stores renewable energy, such as excess solar energy, and converts it into electricity when demand is high. Unlike a traditional battery, this gravity energy storage system is designed as a building that could last for many decades without risk of fire or need for offsite storage. Absolutely impressive! The integration of SOM's architectural expertise with innovative energy solutions like this is a game-changer for the future of sustainable energy. The concept of utilizing tall buildings for grid-scale energy storage is not only ingenious but also essential for our transition to a net-zero future. Kudos to the team for pioneering such a forward-thinking project!
Exciting to see SOM’s expertise in tall buildings contributing to sustainable energy storage with Energy Vault’s gravity system. This innovative approach not only stores renewable energy but also ensures durability and safety, moving us closer to net-zero emissions. Kudos to the team for their groundbreaking work!
These are innovative solutions for high rise buildings
Bill Baker glad you have still got it!
Inspiring!
Fantastic update!

3moSuper interesting. Is there a reason why in needs to be a tower in a dense urban space? Is proximity to users important to energy storage?
