I love credit unions because they partner to expand financial inclusion and build stronger communities. Below is an example of how 6 Illinois credit unions are partnering with the Illinois Credit Union League, Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and SBA to empower small businesses and develop communities.

The First Black.........
I might have ruffle some feathers with this one but every time I see a post, an ad, or hear some mention the "The First Black....." I cringe. I feel like we still shouldn't have to mention that, that we should be much further along than that as a people, and as a society. "The First Black......"
I understand the struggles my people have endured, how slavery still has rumbling impacts, and how the crack era ruined black families and lives.
I understand systemic racism still exists in our criminal justice system, in our politics, in the workplaces, and our education systems.
But as for me, I want our black "firsts" to go toe to toe with our majority institutions, and to compete for business and opportunities based on how we perform. based on how we conduct business, and how we treat others.
To me, being the "first black" carries with it the ideation that we have "arrived" at some new level of socioeconomic status, that we have overcome systems that some would argue were designed to limit our opportunities; however, today we have many more opportunities and chances at success than ever before. Information is at our fingertips, we have the ability to network, research, and market ourselves like never before!
So when I see these posts of "The First Black" it makes me cringe because its so outdated to me. This isn't the 1980's, we're in 2024! Of course we ought to start seeing more black astronauts & black scientists who discovered breakthroughs in medical science & technology because the times are moving! The tide is shifting, we are in a new era of opportunity.
We shouldn't have to say the "First Black" anymore, our successes and achievements need to become more normalized which will begin to break down fences and glass ceilings. Hell, I've seen formerly convicted felons start their own businesses like restaurants and car dealerships. They didn't sit around and say, ohhh I'm black and a convicted felon them white folks ain't gonna give me no job or opportunity!. No! They went out there, started over, figured it out and made a life for themselves.
Celebrating being the “First Black” is almost like adults wanting recognition for their birthday. They want a gift. No, we’ve got bigger fish to fry and bigger goals to attain.
The people in the article pictured below are absolutely beautiful people, but I'd bet they are better known for being smart, value providing, capitalists credit union rather than being the "First Black."
We've come a long way and to those who still struggle I say you have to open your eyes, have confidence in yourself, don't follow the majority, and just be yourself and you'll find a way.
I don't subscribe to the "First Black." I am equal to or greater than.
Miss me with that “First Black” title because it shouldn’t “necessarily” be an achievement in and of itself , but rather a recognition that you kicked ass to get there, that you were smart, and that you handled your business.

Today, Governor Kathy Hochul has proclaimed March 26, 2024 as Credit Union Day in New York State. 🎉
We are proud to share that a few of our internal-owners are attending the 2024 State Governmental Affairs Conference in Albany, where they have the opportunity to ignite change in the credit union landscape, reinforce the collective voice of the credit union movement, and reaffirm our focus on making our members’ lives—and our community—better.
We exist because of our members, and it's important to remember that:
🔸 Credit Unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that exist to serve their members.
🔸 True to the credit union mission, and at the core of our values, is an unwavering commitment to creating mutual value for members and the larger community.
🔸 Our goal is to ensure members are well-positioned to achieve their personal and financial goals.
🔸 This is driven by a rich history, and deeply rooted in our core values, that put people first.
🔸 Today, as Northern Credit Union, we’re state-chartered and proudly serve more than 40,000 members.
