IP X @MobileLoaves 🥖🐟 Last month, our team headed over to Community First! Village for our monthly volunteer day and we all left with our hearts full. Idea Peddlers helped set up some of the mobile homes in the village to make them ready for move-in. We grabbed screwdrivers and put our teamwork skills to good use in a community that focuses on serving goodness. We toured the 51 acre village that houses over 370 formerly homeless neighbors and saw how intentional every little detail was. Designed to encourage community, each home has a front porch and easy access to common areas such as laundry rooms, restroom and shower facilities, outdoor community kitchens and green space. Neighbors also have access to recreational areas where they can explore their artistic side or put their green thumb to the test! Learn more about their unique vision and check out the incredible work that @MobileLoaves is doing in the Austin community! #VolunteerDay #VolunteerWork #GoodWorkForNicePeople

As many of my friends leave the US for less expensive countries with a higher quality of life, I spend much time speaking with single women who are terrified of being homeless. According to a 2023 report from the Department of Health and Human Services, older adults are the fastest-growing age group of people experiencing homelessness, making up almost half of the homeless population. Many elderly Americans live on a fixed income, with 90 percent of adults over 65 receiving a Social Security benefit. However, research suggests that older women are more likely to be living in poverty than older men due to a lifetime of discrimination that included unpaid or paid work. The US government is well aware of the lack of affordable housing. The lists that people can sign up to for consideration for an affordable spot can be a long wait--up to 10 years. I spoke with an Atlanta-based property developer who told me his company would lose money if it created affordable properties. The increase in COGs makes this almost impossible. That's it? We just allow elders who have been active in our country, most of whom have paid taxes and created good in their communities, to live under bridges. Doesn't seem right, does it? How would it feel to see your former neighbor, grandparent, or even elementary school teacher push a grocery cart around? For the next 10 years, all Baby Boomers will have turned 65+. The research shows that ageism blocks these folks from getting better employment than being a Walmart greeter. (sorry Walmart greeters) The tiny house community in Texas with affordable homes for formerly homeless people is a great solution. A similar solution could be created in every state. Spread the word. https://lnkd.in/ey2wt2QW

Why is Set To Thrive important to our vulnerable children? Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a psychological theory that categorizes human needs into a five-tier pyramid. At the base are the physiological needs, including essentials like food, water, clothes, and shelter. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs shows the critical need of Set To Thrive in our community. Set To Thrive’s mission is to provide children experiencing foster care and homelessness with new essential items (clothing, shoes, hygiene products, and more) to bring comfort and confidence during a vulnerable time. We are proud to be able to partner with other organizations in our community that work to meet all the needs of our youth and get them to a place where they can be comfortable, confident, and thrive. Thank you Bombas, Project Glimmer, One Warm Coat, Bloc Bags for partnering with Set To Thrive. We are always looking for corporate partners to help us make an even bigger impact. Let’s make an impact together for our local children experiencing foster care and homelessness. #communityengagement #fostercareawareness #homelessnessawareness #contracosta #alamedacounty #trivalley

One of the most amazing parts of this career, being able to provide security of housing. Not enough, never enough, but contributing to positive change is so powerful
🔑🔑 Sharing the moment where staff hand the key to a new property to one of our service users, who is now becoming a long term tenant of ours 🔑🔑 Our long term supported housing comes with exactly that....support. As much, or as little as needed and wanted. As with all of us, this is fluid. We are never okay all of the time, we experience ebbs and flows throughout life. So having support that adapts in this way is crucial. Another benefit of our housing is being a part of our community. Community connects, so ensuring access to our internal groups and fun days out also ensures meaningful connections, leading to more enjoyment of that forever home. We wish this lady so well in her new home, and look forward to many years of her in our community ❤️ #endhomelessness #support #CommunityBuilding

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a small trailer? Well, two individuals' stories might just give you some insight. Their experiences are thought-provoking and perhaps even a bit scary, especially for those of us who could find ourselves just around the corner living on the street. As Robert Karron rightly points out, here, "What a large percentage of the unhoused population needs is just affordable housing." Let's continue to work towards finding solutions to this critical issue. #EndHomlessness #AffordableHousingForAll #HousingIsARight #PositiveImpactArchitect
