Such a great conversation, this. Two things really resonated for me How important it is to disentangle doing important work from working *too* hard. I think that this is such an easy trap to fall into if you work in a charity or similar. The work matters, and there is always too much to do but this can easily mask other less helpful drivers. At what point are you working 'too' much, neglecting the many other important things in your life, because you are trying to validate your existence or avoid difficult emotions? How to hold all the suffering AND still enjoy life and take time to play -that it is possible to pay attention to the terrible things that are happening in the world and bear witness to them, and at the same time, enjoy your weekend. I have been really struggling with fear of the accelerating climate crisis, and horror at the suffering in Palestine. Finding a way to live with this, honestly, and not let it eclipse finding joy in daily life is a work in progress for me! Highly recommend the whole podcast. Hope you find it useful

In a world that often values constant productivity and hustle, taking a break can feel like a radical act. Yet, this past year, I chose to do just that. I took a step back to focus on what truly matters to me: serving on the board of a small NGO, engaging in meaningful work, practicing yoga, and taking the time to grieve, rest, and recover. This break has allowed me to follow my joy and recharge, but it has also raised an important question: Will taking this time off be a hindrance when I’m ready to re-enter the workforce? More importantly, do I want to work for an employer who doesn’t value the necessity of taking a break when needed? Thank you 💥 Amy Kean 💥 for sharing Gabor Maté’s wisdom where he discusses the importance of taking time to rest and play. It resonated deeply with me and reinforced my belief that prioritizing our well-being is not just beneficial but essential. As I reflect on my journey and look towards the future, I am reminded of the importance of aligning with organizations that value the well-being of their employees. I believe that taking breaks, when needed, should be seen as an investment in one’s long-term productivity and creativity, rather than a hindrance. So, I invite you to join the conversation: How can we shift the narrative to recognize the importance of rest and play in our professional lives? How can we create a work culture that values and supports taking breaks for our overall well-being?

Even more true when doing a startup where the expectations often are that you should work 60-80 hours a week. It is so hard, but so important to keep what really matters in the world top of mind always. Your health, your family and nature. And the only reason health goes first is because it's your biggest responsibility towards your family. Joy, play, nature and family are all part of startup success. And like health, a loving family and being active in nature can be used as enablers to build a really good business for the long run. And let's never forget how important it is to recognize the true values in life when we are building our products. We make a gazillion micro decisions every day that shapes our products. As you go about your careers which is constantly busy and you create a retirement plan, how about a Financial Plan which incorporates a fulfilling life before and throughout retirement so you don’t have a regret like this. Very touching video.

Supposed to be on a LinkedIn break but felt compelled to write about this... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm convinced that each and every one of us experienced childhood trauma. Trauma is another word for hurt. And we've deepened its power by carrying it with us our entire life. Things such as reward and punishment, being constantly measured against educational and health standards, cultural standards, biases, handed-down traditions and ways of belief... all of these are a form of psychological trauma - I would call, psychological suicide. Play nurtures our natural state of being whether it is playing a musical instrument, playing outside, playing with words, playing with friends, etc.... We are gradually conditioned out of this state and told it's childish and yet, it's what we naturally do when we are free. The good news is that you can see the illusion of how the ego-self has developed in our psyche. How it plays into our lives daily causing tiredness and fatigue, stress, anxiety. If you do, you will also see that it can be put aside so that it doesn't interrupt the 'now', which is where qualities of joy, play, and creativity blossom. We are really awesome people - we just forget sometimes.
