A new study from the University of Houston College of Optometry aims to understand who might be at risk for future vision loss. The study will analyze the vision health of patients with prediabetes and diabetes. By investigating both the front and back of the eye, as well as different types of glucose dysfunction, this research could lead to better preventative strategies and, ultimately, help preserve vision. https://lnkd.in/exCPvPVR #DiabeticRetinopathy #EyeHealth #EarlyDetection

"The hormonal and physical changes experienced by expectant mothers might include dry eye, blurred vision, or severe changes to vision. These may also be the first sign of a more serious condition like gestational diabetes." While expecting, here are 3 vision changes that you should be aware of: Dry eye, severe blurring or fluctuation in vision, double vision, flashes and floaters, and partial vision loss. "Women with diabetes or gestational diabetes should see their doctor of optometry once per trimester to monitor the blood vessels in the eye and to ensure steps are being taken to reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy, diabetes-induced retinal damage that can lead to permanent blindness." 【Evaluating the Efficacy of Cervical Tactile Ultrasound Technique as a Predictive Tool for Spontaneous Preterm Birth】 Full article: https://lnkd.in/gZUtDZie (Authored by Vladimir Egorov, et al., from Advanced Tactile Imaging, Inc. (USA), etc.) #Spontaneous_preterm_birth (sPTB) not only results in immediate consequences such as neonatal mortality and morbidity but also has long-term implications including cognitive, behavioral, and neurological deficits in the surviving infants. Consequently, early and accurate prediction of sPTB is of paramount importance to improve neonatal outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. This study evaluates the efficacy of an innovative cervical tactile ultrasound approach in predicting sPTB at 24 - 28 weeks of gestation in women with singleton pregnancies. #Cervical_Elasticity

Upper arm aesthetics often suffer from aging effects such as skin laxity and sagging due to collagen and elastin depletion. Fat loss, obesity, and weight fluctuations further exacerbate these issues. Existing classification systems for upper arm excess are complex and have practical limitations. Objectives The aim of this study was to develop a more concise and clearer classification of upper arm excess that can guide surgical interventions effectively and assess clinical outcomes. 🔗Read the paper: https://lnkd.in/e46UbgUX

A case study: Latent hypermetropia LATENT HYPEROPIA is one of the most overlooked conditions in refraction. Yet, it can be a hidden cause of ASTHENOPIC SYMPTOMS, affecting children, teens, and adults alike. If left undiagnosed and uncorrected, it can lead to CHRONIC EYE STRAIN, reduced near vision, and even PREMATURE PRESBYOPIA. Recognizing and addressing latent hyperopia is crucial, especially when patients complain of headaches, eye strain, or blurred near vision. A 20-year-old patient visited my clinic with a persistent complaint of headaches for over 1 year. Despite having a visual acuity of 6/6 and an unremarkable medical history, her symptoms remained unresolved despite visiting multiple doctors, including ophthalmologists and optometrists. Medications were prescribed, but nothing seemed to alleviate her headaches. After conducting a thorough examination, I diagnosed latent hyperopia and prescribed +1.00 DS for both eyes after CYCLOPLEGIC REFRACTION. She returned for a follow-up a month later, excited to report significant visual comfort and the complete resolution of her headaches. Note: Mild hyperopia if associated with Ashthenopia should be corrected only. #LatentHyperopia #Optometry #HeadacheRelief #Asthenopia #HyperopiaCorrection #Optometrists

A Case Study: Solving Persistent Headaches and Accommodative Esotropia. A 11-year-old patient came to my clinic with complaints of PERSISTENT HEADACHE and REDUCED DISTANT VISION. Upon examining her visual acuity, it was recorded as 6/12 in the right eye and 6/18 in the left eye. When I tested her with her old prescription, her VA improved slightly to 6/9 in the right eye and 6/12 in the left eye. After further investigation, I diagnosed her with STRABISMIC AMBLYOPIA in the left eye and ALTERNATING ACCOMMODATIVE ESOTROPIA. At this point, I decided to perform a CYCLOPLEGIC RETINOSCOPY to ensure an accurate assessment of her refractive error and to fully relax her ACCOMMODATION. Following the retinoscopy, I prescribed her FULL HYPEROPIC CORRECTION to relieve her eyes from the excessive accommodative effort that was contributing to her symptoms. I gave her +5.00/-1.50×180 in the right eye and +5.50/-1.50×180 in the left eye. What was striking is that there was no VA improvement with the new correction, but I realized the primary issue was her UNCORRECTEDHYPEROPIA, which was causing significant ASTHENOPIC SYMPTOMS specifically, her HEADACHE. Her uncorrected hyperopia was likely perpetuating her esotropia, leading to increased accommodative demand and persistent headache. The goal of the new prescription was clear: to fully relax her accommodation, manage her ALTERNATING ACCOMMODATIVE ESOTROPIA, and reduce the strain that was causing her headaches. UNDERCORRECTION would have risked allowing the esotropia to persist or worsen, so addressing the full hyperopic correction was crucial. #Strabismus #Amblyopia #VisionCare #AccommodativeEsotropia #PediatricOptometry #Hyperopia #Asthenopia #CycloplegicRetinoscopy #EyeHealth #OptometryCaseStudy

Let's shed some light on the Canadian blind community – a resilient group navigating life with incredible strength. Over 1.5 million Canadians identify themselves as having sight loss, while an additional 8 million grapple with eye diseases that could lead to vision impairment. The leading culprits causing blindness in Canada are cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Globally, the scope widens to over 2.2 billion people grappling with blindness or partial sight. Of this, 1 billion visual impairments or blindness are preventable. It is important to note that 75% of vision loss is preventable. A survey done by the Canadian Council of the Blind and Specsavers shows that in Canada alone, 51% of its citizens are unaware of how frequently they should visit their ophthalmologist, and 38% are overdue for their eye exam. One must see their eye doctor once every year to check on their eye health, as diseases such as glaucoma can be present without any prevalent symptoms. In the words of CCB's president, Jim Tokos, "The goal is always to catch eye diseases before eyes start to show symptoms." As we work together, let's continue to raise awareness, foster understanding, and work towards increasing the frequency of eye exams this year. #BlindCommunity #VisionAwareness #Preventablesightloss #EyeExam
