Lurie Children's Hospital is facing a number of lawsuits for a #cyberattack which reportedly exposed the data of over 775,000 people earlier this year. While the hospital has not yet confirmed any misuse of the exposed data, the lawsuits allege that the hospital's failure to secure its systems lead to the violation of patients' privacy rights. It is still unclear what exact information may have been exposed during the breach. 💀 “the worst attack on U.S. infrastructure to date” Two weeks ago, ransomeware group AlphV successfully hacked the IT systems of UniteHealth Group, causing disruptions to insurance and prescriptions, among other things. The group claims to have taken over 6TB of data. Why we care: The healthcare sector is notorious for hacks. This year (reminder— it’s only March) we have seen 5 hospital system attacks (49 hospitals, according to Cybersecurity Dive). The attack was not a direct assault on the healthcare system but rather a third party vendor. What we can learn: Be cautious about your third party vendors. This is not meant to disparage, but just being aware to what systems they have access to, what security they have in place, and what protocols are for data breaches. Building relationships with your vendors is key. Cyberattacks are not stopping. The best time to invest in your security is immediately. Each time one of these attacks happen, law enforce can learn more about hacker groups and their practices. Hopefully over time this can lead to better barriers to attacks before they happen.
