What gets in the way for leaders? Why is there discomfort in not knowing? How do leaders respond in times of ambiguity? These are just some of the questions Max Dickins can help business leaders tackle head-on, using his signature technique of “Listening to Ignite”— a concept inspired by his background in improvisation theatre, where navigating the unscripted is the norm. Max is the co-director of the UK’s first dedicated improvisation training school Hoopla Impro Apply to join a small and select cohort with IDEO London, Hoopla! And other partners on 18 September for #TheSpaceBetweenCourageandConfidence. A day of inspiration and advanced training for selected leaders and change-makers. https://lnkd.in/gvsjN3sQ

Leadership is a performance And no, that wasn’t a grammatical error. This is performance as in a “stage performance” There is on stage behavior and off stage behavior for theatre actors, unfortunately the off stage behavior for Leaders is shrinking more and more. As an actor, I learnt firsthand the importance and difficulty of “staying in character” while on stage, when I stubbed my cigarette on a fellow actor’s cheek and she still stayed in character (the play was mother of 1086 or hazaar chaurasi ki maa, if you really want to know). So, in this sometimes misunderstood idea of “Authenticity” – it doesn’t give us free rein to “be ourselves”. Sometimes, Leadership is a performing role. Herein, lies the paradox – there are parts of us we bring to the table, when we interact with different stakeholder groups – when there is lesser incongruence between the way, these groups experience you, the more authentic you are!
