Compare the two small squares in the large fields. The right one looks brighter, the left one looks grayer. This is a typical visual illusion involving the simultaneous contrast. Calling it an illusion and putting it aside misses the bigger picture. What you are seeing in real life is not an illusion, it's your healthy response to overall brightness. Let's say the left side is a bright, white interior. The right side is a more muted interior. The little square in the middle is a person sitting in the space. Looking at the person, which background color causes the person to look dull and grayish? Looking as the viewer, which space is going to allow you to see details of the interior better?
