🌟 Today, iDiv researchers had the pleasure of attending a seminar by our Communicator-in-Residence, Dan Charles. The room was packed with enthusiastic attendees, and the lively Q&A session at the end was truly engaging! 🎤🗣️ Dan shared insights from his talk, “Anatomy of a story about pesticides and pollinators - and what it tells us about science journalism today.” He delved into the intricacies of writing about science, using his experiences reporting on neonicotinoid insecticides and their impact on pollinators as a case study. 🐝🌱 Thank you, Dan, for shedding light on the challenges and decisions that go into science journalism. And thank you to everyone who attended! 🌍 🔗 Learn more about the iDiv Communicator-in-Residence program here: https://lnkd.in/eh5nfVeA #SciComm #Biodiversity #iDiv #Journalism

🔬 Thrilled to share the invited opinion piece Carol Cardona and I co-authored that was featured on Scientific American's website earlier this week! 🐔✨ https://lnkd.in/dc8QmGMT Delving into the realm of genetic engineering, the article offers an optimistic perspective on utilizing CRISPR technology to improve animal health and food system sustainability but cautions against the use of CRISPR to mitigate highly complex diseases such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. We also explore the potential ethical implications and societal considerations surrounding the application of CRISPR in agriculture. While we navigate the complexities of genetic engineering, there's a sense of excitement about the prospects for enhancing poultry health and resilience. 🌱💡 Join me in contemplating the future implications of this groundbreaking research and its implications for food security and public health. Let's engage in a thoughtful dialogue as we chart the course for responsible innovation in biotechnology. 🌍💬 #CRISPR #OpinionPiece #PoultryHealth #EthicalScience #avianinfluenza #veterinarymedicine

Entomological Surveys in Rural Tanzania Reveal Key Opportunities for Targeted Larval Source Management to Control Malaria in Areas Dominated by Anopheles funestus 'These findings suggest that An. funestus, which is the dominant malaria vector in the area, mediating over 95% of malaria transmission, preferentially occupies only a small subset of uniquely identifiable aquatic habitats in both wet and dry seasons. This presents an opportunity to expand LSM in rural settings by carefully targeting An. funestus habitats, which might be effective and logistically feasible as a complementary approach alongside existing interventions. Further research should assess the impact of such targeted LSM strategies compared to blanket LSM.'

Relaxing Saturday! I invite you to read this nice article to learn how this technique could revolution the life around the globe! New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) can speed up the development of crops that feed our growing population in a #Sustainable way and are more resilient to #ClimateChange and diseases – all while maintaining the top health and safety standards. It is in our nature to be skeptical about new things. New science in particular takes a while to be accepted by the public. This is why I invited you to read this open letter, signed by 37 Nobel laureates and more than 1,500 scientists, calling on the EU Parliament to ease restrictions on gene-edited crops to increase global #FoodSecurity.

#researchethics #ethicalresearch Have you ever inquired what regulates the conduction of trials on humans that guarantees “no harm” for the patients?! 🙄🙄 In fact, ethical considerations are an important part of each research design. Most renowned research programs have a specific module for research ethics and how to comply. The World Medical Association (WMA) has developed the Declaration of Helsinki as a statement of ethical principles for medical research involving human subjects, including research on identifiable human material and data. 😉 In medicine, a known rule says, “Do no harm.” Upon designing your research, it should be approved by the institutional review board (IRB) for ethical clearance. ☑ ☑ Do you think that such ethical principles are only important when it comes to human research?! How is that different from animal laboratory research? 🤷♂️ 🤷♂️ Let’s share our thoughts! #research #researcher #scientificwriting #scientificresearch #science #scientist #medicine #publichealth #community #board #ethicalresearch #ethics #researchethics #animalscience #clinicaltrials #clinicalresearch
