US start-up Radiant Industries says the US DOE has reviewed and approved the Safety Design Strategy for’ Kaleidos microreactor in the National Reactor Innovation Center’s Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (NRIC-DOME) test bed at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Micro Modular Reactors (MMR) are by definition the smallest of nuclear reactors (Electric power < 10 MWe). Note that MMRs & SMRs have a lower economic performance than Large Nuclear Reactors and are thus best suited for remote power applications, such as the Canadian north or small communities that lack high voltage transmission connection to larger capacity grids. Radiant was selected as one of three advanced nuclear energy developers to receive funding from DOE for developing and testing microreactor designs using the DOME test bed at INL. DOE, through NRIC, awarded $3.9m to Radiant, Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (UNSC) and Westinghouse to design experiments to test microreactor designs at DOME. The million $$ question is how long will this technology review process be required to run in order to be greenlighted for commercial application? https://lnkd.in/gRMDXJ56).
