Lots of noise about smart sewers being a new concept, but we at Xylem have been working in this field for a while. Whilst one of the most attractive uses of these types of technologies is for the reduction or removal of sewer spills, there are other additional benefits that can be included, such as the stabilising flow to treatment during dry weather flow, identification of blockages and other anomalous behaviour, tracking of industrial discharges, as well as understanding wastewater catchments and the receiving waters they discharge into more holistically. On Monday, we announced something big! We're integrating the innovative VelRay X filter into a first-of-its-kind mobile filtration system capable of processing up to 13,000 m³/day. This solution will help transform water management in Alberta’s oil and gas sector—particularly for hydraulic fracturing—by streamlining the entire water lifecycle, from sourcing to flowback treatment and reuse. The VelRay X filters particles as small as 20 microns, handles high solids loads (including iron, organic materials, and FOG), and features a compact, energy-efficient design with a patented self-cleaning mechanism and particle sepration techniques. It enhances water quality, boosts well performance, reduces landfill waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and maintenance needs, all while improving safety and aligning with sustainability goals. With a $750,000 investment through the TIER fund, Eximius Environmental Solutions is advancing the development of a filtration system featuring the innovative VelRay X filter. This unique and innovative technology is designed to remove total suspended solids from the variable water conditions in the oil and gas industry. By improving water quality for reuse, the system reduces the need for fresh water, minimizes wastewater disposal, prevents equipment blockages, extends equipment lifespan, and mitigates pollution risks -- all leading to significant cost savings for the industry. 👏 Congratulations to #OurJacobs team in Toronto, Ontario for winning the Water Environment Association of Ontario (WEAO) Intelligent Water Systems Challenge for innovative work addressing nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions from water resource recovery facilities. The IWS Challenge recognizes innovative solutions to engineering and operational challenges facing water and wastewater utilities. Jacobs’ winning solution is a unique hybrid model that combines data-driven models with process knowledge to predict the liquid-phase N₂O concentration and gain insights on potential mitigation strategies. One of the challenges associated with N₂O monitoring is data management and analysis, i.e., how to use the data and extract information to develop mitigation insights and inform operations.
