Extraction section troubleshooting / Merox #Troubleshooting #Merox #Extraction Here are some useful guidelines for troubleshooting the caustic mercaptan extraction section of Merox unit: 1. Excessive amount of mercaptan in the product = Insufficient caustic flow rate. 2- Excessive amount of disulfide in the product = Excessive caustic flow rate. 3- Excessive caustic neutralization or dilution = Extraction reaction effect 4- Low hydrocarbon flow rate = Relative to design flow rate. 5- Insufficient mercaptan solubility = Higher boiling feedstock. 6- Reduced extraction efficiency = Excessive hydrocarbon feed temperature. 7- Up to a certain point the presence of acid oils improves extraction, when their presence interferes with caustic flow in the extractor, poorer results or caustic entrainment may be obtained. 8- Accumulation of non-regenerable acidic materials. In time, regardless of the care used in prewashing, there will be some spending of the caustic due to carbon dioxide picked up from the regeneration air. Only experience can determine the extent to which spending of the caustic with weak acids can be tolerated before extracting efficiency drops off.

Smectite clays, e.g., hectorites, have been proposed as additives for Portland cement to obtain a thixotropic formulation. Good results have been obtained with the synthetic clay known as Laponite (Pafitis et al., 1996). The material is capable of gelling reversibly in less than 60 s. This thixotropic material gen­erally finds use in oil well applications; for example, to plug lost circulation zones, as grouts to repairdamaged or corroded casing, and to limitannular gas migration.
