On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall as a category 1 storm in New Jersey. Today marks one year since #HurricaneIan struck Southwest #Florida as an extremely powerful category 5 storm. Before reaching Florida, #Ian first made landfall in Cuba, causing intense flooding and a nationwide power outage. Ian’s path of destruction continued into Florida, where it caused a storm surge of 10-15 feet, heavy flooding, the collapse of buildings, homes and bridges, and power outages. Ian’s devastation was widespread, and it became the deadliest storm to strike Florida since 1935 and the costliest hurricane in Florida’s history. Communities continue to feel the effects of this catastrophic storm today as recovery efforts are ongoing. Hurricane Watch Alert & #PSA #1: As #HurricaneBeryl barrels through the #Caribbean and has become a Category 5 storm, American Red Cross #volunteer and staff teams are staging assets in the event it makes US landfall. In such a case, helping displaced people will be job #1.
