Thrilled to have collaborated with Niva Kay over the last few years on REGENERATE Game Jam, showcasing organic, regenerative, and indigenous farming practices through 70 innovative games! 🌾🎮 Also incredibly proud to share the story and our findings at academyEX’s Converge Research Symposium on Friday last week.
With the amazing support from our incredible mentors and sponsors, REGENERATE Game Jam ran three times in 2022-2023. In that time it engaged 450 participants from 48 countries and saw many indigenous-inspired farming games being produced in the likes of Brazil, Iran and Aotearoa New Zealand!
The 2023 event, held over five days in June last year, saw remarkable growth and diversity:
- 54% increase in participants and mentors compared to our second Matariki-focused jam in June 2022,
- Participants, many who had competed in previous REGENERATE Game Jams, joined us from 38 countries, including New Zealand, USA, Tanzania, Brazil, Chile, Germany, UK, Iran, and Sweden
- 32 teams formed plus we saw 42 solo jammers, surpassing previous years
- Average participant age dropped from 26 to 24, with the top age group being 15-year-olds [despite industrial action in NZ schools!]
- 26% of participants were high school-aged (13-18), with 30% of these from Aotearoa New Zealand, and 7% identifying as gender diverse
🔍 Observations:
- Extending the jam duration to 5 days attracted more young participants and students
- We also saw a greater range of diverse farming practices.
- Cash prizes boosted participation but didn't enhance game quality as much as we anticipated, and we noted some unexpected behaviors, possibly due to the cash incentives.
📚 Recommendations:
- Continue engaging diverse schools and encourage 13-18-year-olds to participate
- Provide dedicated game development support for rangatahi, potentially integrating Game Jam activities into school curricula
Excited to see the future of regenerative farming in gaming! 🌍🌱

Had a great day at the academyEX symposium on Friday. Kerry Topp and I were there to talk about our findings and journey of running REGENERATE Game Jam.
REGENERATE Game Jam ran 3 times in 2022 - 2023 and for us it was a huge success in showcasing a plurality of organic, regenerative and indigenous farming values and practices through the 70 games submitted in these events.
And a little personal bonus — with RGJ being a global and fully online event — even as we’ve been working on this kaupapa together sense 2021 this was the first time the two of us met in real life! Thanks to academyEX for organising and for everyone that has supported, participated and engaged with RGJ over the years.

Discover a story about groundbreaking experiment, an Ecuadorian banana grower showcased the power of innovation and traditional methods. By placing 300 banana plants under severe mold-inducing conditions within a hoop house with continuous misting, only one resilient plant survived intact.
This pivotal moment highlights how combining high-tech approaches with age-old farming wisdom can lead to remarkable discoveries. For us at Atlas Seed, this exemplifies the fusion of methods that drive agricultural progress forward.
Let's continue to push boundaries and explore new frontiers!
And this demonstrates the value and purpose of the UK's Agri-Tech Centres for industry, both in the UK and elsewhere to solve the real issues facing the world's population
As a result of the knowledge exchange visit to Brazil last year, one of our delegates Wyld Networks, have signed an agreement with the Brazilian strawberry producer Staw Agricultura!🍓
🔬 They will deploy Wyld Network's sensor to collect soil moisture data from strawberry farms, helping to improve yields, high-quality fruits, and increasing sustainability. ♻️
🚜 Hear from Andre V., about his experience after joining the delegation visit to Brazil in collaboration with Embrapa and AgriTIERRA.
