Yesterday I was having a conversation with my client about their son who is looking to pursue a career in technology. They are debating between becoming a Cloud Engineer or a Platform Engineer and asked me what I think the difference between these roles are. This got me thinking and from my understanding the difference is as follows: 🔍 Cloud Engineer: As businesses increasingly embrace cloud technologies, Cloud Engineers are at the forefront of designing, implementing, and managing cloud infrastructure. From AWS and Azure to GCP and beyond, they specialise in architecting scalable and reliable solutions in the cloud. Their expertise spans from virtual machines to containers, enabling businesses to leverage the full potential of cloud-native technologies. 💻 Platform Engineer: On the other hand, Platform Engineers focus on the underlying infrastructure that powers applications. Whether it's on-premises, in the cloud, or a hybrid environment, they excel at building and maintaining the platforms that support development and deployment. From managing servers and middleware to orchestrating CI/CD pipelines, Platform Engineers ensure the smooth operation and optimization of the technology stack. 💡 Both roles are integral to the success of modern IT initiatives, each bringing unique expertise to the table. Cloud Engineers drive innovation in cloud architectures and services, while Platform Engineers lay the foundation for seamless application development and deployment. Recommendations and Accomplishments Request recommendations from colleagues or managers who can vouch for your skills and work ethic. Showcase any relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Engineer).
