We are pleased to see that ‘WORKS with Nature: Low Carbon Adaptation Techniques for a Changing World’ has now launched, providing a detailed list of the different techniques deployed around the world, across various environments to combat climate change. The United Nations National Adaptation Planning team and Kotchakorn Voraakhom worked on this over the past year with support from Climate Positive Design, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), Vestre and Landscape Forms. Housing Our Future: Towards a Greener, Better, and Safer Habitat. On September 21st, the UIA, UN-HABITAT, and Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a high-level roundtable in New York, bringing together architects, urban planners, and government officials to address the global housing crisis and climate change. Discussions centered on: ✔️ Prioritizing adequate housing on the global agenda ✔️ Investing in SDG11 for sustainable urbanization ✔️ Supporting climate-responsive, cost-effective architecture ✔️ Cross-sector collaboration and knowledge exchange ✔️ Participatory urban planning and new financial models for housing. This roundtable also emphasized the importance of COP 30 in advancing these agendas, focusing on housing, architecture, and urban territories. The collective goal? Urban Retrofitting for Sustainability: Beyond Tectonics, the Role of Aerial Design in Climate-Responsive Architecture Source :MDPI This study examines the historic residential architecture of Cádiz, focusing on its bioclimatic design strategies and adaptation to climate change. Traditional construction methods, such as high-mass façades and environmental control systems, enable these buildings to achieve indoor comfort without relying on air conditioning. The findings highlight the potential for improving energy efficiency through the application of these strategies in urban retrofitting. On-site measurements demonstrate how manipulating openings for solar exposure or ventilation significantly impacts indoor thermal conditions. The research underscores the importance of preserving aerial design features and adapting traditional strategies for future climate scenarios, offering insights applicable to other Mediterranean historic cities. World Economic Forum calls to hire Landscape Architects to create nature positive cities! Nature Positive Guidelines for the Transition in Cities (2024) by the World Economic Forum underscore the critical importance of integrating nature into urban environments to address pressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. This integration is not merely desirable but essential for creating sustainable and resilient cities. The report explicitly highlights the need to hire landscape architects and academics, whose expertise is important for successfully implementing and scaling nature-related initiatives. As the global fight against climate change and biodiversity loss intensifies, landscape architects are taking center stage. At IFLA, we are constantly advocating for the prominent role that landscape architects play. Hence, we have been: Strengthening Ties with UN Agencies: At the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt Forum, we celebrated the signing of an MoU with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) to address urgent urban challenges by leveraging landscape architecture to design resilient, sustainable, and inclusive urban spaces. We also forged stronger partnerships with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Urban Health Programme. A Voice at the COPs: IFLA actively participated in the three COPs held this year—COP16 Colombia on biodiversity, COP29 Azerbaijan on climate change, and COP16Riyadh on desertification. Our presence at these critical summits underscored our commitment to environmental stewardship and highlighted the vital role of landscape architects in mitigating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and combating desertification. Working Alongside Our Global Partners: We established impactful MoUs and partnerships this year with key organizations such as the World Green Infrastructure Network (WGIN), the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA), and the Urban Biodiversity Network (URBIO).
