This week in Break It Down, we discuss how a Will Smith series led to the discovery of a new species of giant anaconda, plus the smallest star ever discovered, lab-grown testicles, an electric vehicle breakthrough, sophisticated Neanderthal glue, and how to destroy a dinner party by dropping the question: is math discovered or invented? Sit back, relax, and let’s break it down… https://lnkd.in/e5yF3V3A By Rachael Funnell and Eleanor Higgs

French philosopher Paul Virilio said, ‘When you invent the ship, you also invent the shipwreck; when you invent the plane, you also invent the plane crash; and when you invent electricity, you invent electrocution. Each carries their own negativity, which is invented at the same time as their technical progress.’ Once we realized that human beings could answer questions and provide insights, we also invented bad data. There are less shipwrecks, plane crashes and electrocution accidents today compared to years ago and through GMIFY, we can also begin to turn the page on bad data...#mentalhealth #dataquality #marketresearch #insightsassociation #esomar #newmr

🔊 For the first episode in our new series on the history of thinking about thinking machines, David talks to philosopher Shannon Vallor about Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927). The last great silent film is the most futuristic: a vision of robots and artificial life, it is also about where the human heart fits into an increasingly mechanised world. Is it prophetic? Is it monstrous? And who are the winners and losers when war is declared on the machines? https://lnkd.in/dNXgbXgs

https://lnkd.in/gD-D4PqJ Brian Taylor shares his research on magnetoreception. Animals like birds and sea turtles use magnetoreception to use the Earth’s magnetic field for navigation, but it’s not a sense that’s well understood. Brian uses animal magnetoreception to engineer new ways to navigate the globe. Even cooler, he also takes hypotheses for how magnetoreception works in animals and uses computational simulations to digitally test them. Check out this episode to hear more about Brian’s research and learn more about this little known sensory ability.

Did you know that there’s only one SAFE bulk cargo and container scanning system that does not require the driver to leave the vehicle or needs an exclusion zone for the operator? Most non-intrusive scanners used to inspect containers and bulk cargoes use X-Ray/Gamma Imaging Systems, which produce harmful ionizing radiation and therefore require safety exclusion zones. This requirement to isolate the vehicle time-consuming, slowing the whole screening process. Discovery® from Decision Sciences uses muon tomography, which emits no harmful ionizing radiation, instead it passively tracks naturally occurring particles to produce imagery and identify contraband hidden in cargoes. Discovery® uniquely produces no radiation, meaning: • No exclusion zone or requirement for the costly civil works to provide Radiation protection • The driver remains in the vehicle. • Will not affect the driver, cargo, system operators, or other employees. 【Real Time Thermal Image Based Machine Learning Approach for Early Collision Avoidance System of Snowplows】 Full article: https://lnkd.in/ggefQCe9 (Authored by Fletcher Wadsworth, et al., from University of Wyoming, USA.) To reduce vehicle collisions with #snowplows in poor weather conditions, this study details the development of a real time #thermal_image based machine learning approach to an early collision avoidance system for snowplows, to detect trailing vehicles and their distances from the snowplow. #Convolutional_Neural_Networks #Residual_Networks #Object_Detection #Image_Processing New article of submission link: https://lnkd.in/gtehf8Wa

Prof. Grüne explores various dissipativity concepts and turnpike properties for discrete-time stochastic nonlinear optimal control problems in this talk. Building on Jan C. Willems' classic dissipativity notions, he extends these concepts to $L^r$ random variables and probability measures. The talk covers different formulations of stochastic turnpike properties, ranging from random variables to probability measures and moments. The results are framed through stationarity in distribution and random variables, highlighting the connection between dissipativity and stochastic turnpike phenomena within a finite-horizon Markov decision process framework. #iitbombay #controls #stochastic #probability #Markovdecision #turnpike
