Thanks to DCN - Daily Cargo News for their feature on cruising in the most recent edition. It was a pleasure to speak with them and highlight the incredible rebound we have seen in cruising. While cruising returned to Australian ports much later than other parts of the world, the ships have been resoundingly welcomed by Australian cruise fans who have been heading back to sea in huge numbers, with higher levels of passenger spending, higher levels of cruise line spending, and record levels of economic output around Australia.
The result is a resurgent cruise industry worth A$5.63 billion to the Australian economy, and supporting the equivalent of more than 18,000 Australian jobs, bringing renewal to dozens of tourism destinations around the country.
In addition to the ports themselves, cruise generates enormous income for businesses like tourism operators, tour guides, hotels and restaurants, retailers, travel agents, transport providers and the extensive supply chain through to the farmers who provide Australian produce served on board.
The increase in domestic cruising is particularly exciting. Cruise brings in around 300,000 international visitors to Australia each year, and we know international visitors spend more, as they do more pre and post-cruise stays, so the more domestic cruising we can encourage, the more international cruise visitors we can encourage, the great the benefit.
