In updating a firefighter suicide identification-prevention-intervention course for a contract agency, I encountered the following quote from Richard Gist Patricia Watson Frank Leto & Vickie Taylor. Genius! I couldn't agree more. What are you doing as an individual or as an agency to be prepared 2 days before?

This is an interesting post from Stephanie Conn, PhD, ABPP, Police/Public Safety Psychology! I love this dialogue because our reaction to trauma has a lot to do with not only what we experience, but what we bring to the table/what precedes it. To me, this explains why events lead to different reactions in different people and how some critical incidents impact us more based on what else is happening at the time. What is your experience? #criticalincidents #trauma #firstresponders

Why Prop P? The last bond issue for the Wentzville Fire Protection District was in 2014. Since then, the population of Wentzville alone has grown by 46%, and emergency calls have increased by 52%. Wentzville firefighter/paramedics are often first on scene for medical calls, providing advanced life support until an ambulance arrives. Our trucks and gear need updates in order to keep up. "A firefighter survived because of this amazing tool that SHOULD be on every ALS vehicle in the state! This medication, referred to by some as “fire victim narcan” because of its effectiveness is a true game changer for the survival of fire victims, Civilians and firefighters." Chief Jason Bangma If you have studied fire behavior you know that one of the gasses commonly produced is cyanide. As providers we have focused a lot on carbon monoxide but often overlook some of the other deadly products of combustion. There's a great article about an FDNY firefighter in the May 4th, 2024 edition of Firehouse that attributes the firefighter's survival to the quick thinking of the paramedics. They had an understanding of fire gasses and used their Cyanokit on the firefighter. Instead of a funeral, he recently walked out of the hospital. We know the number one killer of firefighters is cardiac. Most departments have put AED's on all their apparatus to protect the public, and its own members. We now have a better understanding of what smoke contains. Do you have Cyanokits for your members? I can help if you don't.
