A new prospective cohort study & Mendelian randomization analysis by Greve et al provided compelling evidence that elevated #triglycerides are a causal risk factor for developing #psoriasis. In an editorial Alexander Sorokin and I argue that future work should evaluate the impact of lowering triglycerides on psoriasis severity and development of #psoriaticarthritis, #diabetes, and atherosclerotic #cardiovasculardisease in this at risk population. Just as the zebra's distinctive black and white stripes make it stand out in a crowd, rare diseases are often characterized by their unusual manifestations and scarcity. Ever felt like a medical unicorn? 🦄 That's the magic of rare diseases! What is a Rare Disease? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), rare diseases, also known as orphan diseases, are those that affect a small percentage of the population. However, definitions may vary across regions. In India, rare diseases have gained increasing recognition in recent years. The Indian government defines rare diseases as those that affect fewer than 1 in 5,000 individuals. Despite the lower prevalence compared to more common ailments, rare diseases collectively impact considerable number of people in the country. What are the types of rare diseases? Rare diseases encompass a vast array of conditions, ranging from genetic disorders to autoimmune diseases and rare cancers. Each rare disease presents unique clinical features, diagnostic criteria, and management approaches, necessitating specialized care and collaboration among healthcare professionals. Rare diseases represent a multifaceted challenge within the healthcare landscape, affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Rare diseases may be rare, but their impact is anything but!
