All-In #Summit: #BillGurley presents 2,851 Miles: https://lnkd.in/dRwuzsAH Bill Gurley is a seasoned venture capitalist who calles for massive transparency and awareness to combat these issues and concluded by warning about the potential dangers of government overreach in regulating emerging technologies like AI. 1. First Encounter with Regulators Gurley needed to engage with a congressman to support a Wi-Fi project, only to find himself embroiled in the pay-to-play nature of political meetings. 2. Philadelphia Wi-Fi Project Tropos Networks’ Wi-Fi project was blocked by Verizon and Comcast through legislative action, preventing municipal broadband. 3. Telecommunications Act of 1996 Consolidated market power among a few large telecom companies. 4. American Recovery Act and Medical Software Obama’s act incentivized doctors to buy specific software, primarily benefiting Epic Systems, whose CEO was on the Health IT Council. 5. COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Tests The US lagged behind Europe in approving and distributing affordable rapid tests, primarily due to regulatory hurdles and favoritism. KEY METRICS - # of new banks in the US after 2009: 0 - # of epic's EHR competitors fined: 3 - # of telecom markets controlled by 4 companies in 1996: 48 - # of telecom markets controlled by 4 companies a few years later: 85% - # of rapid test vendors approved in Germany: 96 RECOMMENDATIONS ON IMPROVING REGULATORY LAWS a) Enhance Transparency: - Mandate real-time public disclosure of all political contributions and lobbying activities. - Utilize blockchain technology for secure and transparent tracking. b) Implement Strict Revolving Door Policies: - Enforce longer cooling-off periods for government officials moving into industries they once regulated. c) Promote Open Competition: - Limit the ability of incumbents to draft and influence legislation. - Encourage competitive bidding and open-source solutions, especially in technology and healthcare. d) Focus on Net Societal Benefit: - Prioritize regulations that provide clear, measurable benefits to society over those that protect incumbent interests. FUNNY TIDBITS - Spouses Check Requirement: Gurley humorously described the absurdity of needing spouses to write $5,000 checks to attend a meeting with a congressman, even if they didn't attend. - Epic Systems Incentives: The notion of doctors receiving $44,000 to buy specific software, with additional payments for proving its use, was presented as a comically flawed incentive system. - Excessive Packaging for COVID Tests: Gurley mocked the over-engineered packaging of Abbott’s antigen tests, contrasting it with the simplicity and affordability of European alternatives.

Earlier this year, I was a spekaer at the incredible Othering & Belonging Conference in Berlin. #OBCONF23 The dichotomy of othering and belonging lies at the heart of much of the division, separation, and conflict we see throughout the world. Addressing this duality is essential because it raises questions about who matters and who doesn’t, who is worthy and who is not. These questions are then reflected in our policies and social structures, regulating our access to basic resources and rights. The O & B conference provided a platform to think deeply about how we can transform our social and political structures to ensure our humanity is realised. A key component in this is overcoming systems of oppression and creating a reality of belonging that embraces all that we are. It’s a tall task, but we surely need more of this!
