As President of the National Society of Genetic Counselors, I appreciate Bloomberg’s attention to the limitations of direct-to-consumer DNA tests in their recent late May issue. However, I would like to add some additional context. While DNA tests aren’t always game-changers, professional guidance from #GeneticCounselors is essential. We help determine the need for tests, interpret results, and support patients in making informed health decisions. Genetics isn’t just about individual health but public health too, offering new strategies for managing risks like heart disease and cancer. Direct-to-consumer tests are only one part of genetic health care. We need knowledgeable specialists to bridge the gap between patients and providers, ensuring comprehensive care.
