The Point in Time (#PIT) Count is a once-a-year count of individuals and families in shelters and places not meant for human habitation, usually happening during the last 10 days in January. This year, the count happened on January 24th in 65 out of 91 counties of the Indiana Balance of State (Marion County completes their own count). Approximately 1 in 4 people counted in the 2024 PIT count were under the age of 24. In Indiana people aged 35-54 were overrepresented in the 2024 PIT count compared to recent national PIT and census data. People ages 65 and older were underrepresented. What do you do when you're bored on a Friday night? I did a quick analysis of the association between wealth inequality and the burden of homicides in Philadelphia in 2023 (data from the city's open data portal and the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey 5-year median household income estimates). What I found was not surprising, but still disappointing. The Gini coefficient of 0.699 speaks of a severe and pronounced inequity in the burden of homicide on the city. And the Lorentz curve below visualizes this finding. Indeed, the poorest 15 census tracts had 10% of the reported criminal homicides for the year. The richest 15 census tracts? Less than 2%. If there were no inequity in the burden of homicides by wealth of a census tract, then the line would be a nice 45-degree line, like the dotted blue line below. This is a continuation of the analysis for the blog post here: https://lnkd.in/eSbJjxbi Now, off to bed. I'll figure out how to fix this tomorrow.

Report: Tennessee on Track to Gain 10th U.S. House Seat Tennessee’s population growth puts it on track for an additional U.S. House seat in 2032, Tennessee Lookout reports. According to the latest U.S. Census data, Tennessee’s population grew to 7.1 million people in 2023, which, if maintained, would mean it would gain another seat during the next redistricting cycle eight years from now. The paper reports that the state has not had more than nine House seats in some 80 years. After the Civil War, Tennessee had 10 congressional districts before losing one during the 1930 redistricting process, regaining it in 1940 and losing it again in 1950.

The characteristics that showed the greatest correlation with Massachusetts county-level net coverage errors were adults aged 25+ without a high school degree and female-headed households. However, the Census Bureau cautions that while undercounts of the young child population have been a recurring issue from census-to-census, the direct cause of the net coverage error is not known. Therefore, the statistical relationship between the socioeconomic factors outlined in the analysis referenced in the graphic and the net coverage error should be considered for their correlative association rather than causal effects.

In light of the recent Census data revealing Allegheny County’s continued population decline, it’s time for a collective pause and a strategic pivot. Our region is at a crossroads, and the path we choose now will define our future. The data doesn’t lie – we’ve seen one of the nation’s largest population losses, a trend that threatens the very fabric of our economic vitality. But numbers only tell part of the story. Behind these figures are the lives of our residents, the dreams of our local entrepreneurs, and the potential of our beautiful region. We must hold our area leaders accountable, not through blame but through a call to action. It’s time for a collaborative plan that goes beyond the boardroom and into the heart of our communities. We need strategies that involve local residents, businesses, and stakeholders in a meaningful way. Our focus should be on creating a business environment that attracts new ventures while nurturing the ones that call Allegheny County home. This means reassessing our economic policies, streamlining processes, and, most importantly, listening to the voices of those who invest their time and resources here. Housing is another critical piece of the puzzle. We have an opportunity to innovate with infill housing development, turning empty lots into vibrant homes for families across the income spectrum. Let’s explore inclusive housing development alternatives for building market rate and affordable housing options for middle-class and low-income earners. It’s time to build a future in which Allegheny County isn’t just surviving but thriving. #AlleghenyForward #CommunityDevelopment #EconomicGrowth https://lnkd.in/gqcaK9T7

Blended families, comprising parents and children from previous relationships, are increasingly common. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 130 million Americans have at least one step relative. This underscores the importance of tailored estate planning for blended families, as a significant portion of the population is navigating the complexities of these family structures. Careful consideration is needed to ensure all family members are fairly provided for and to minimize potential conflicts. Happy National Senior Citizens Day! Today, there are more people part of the celebrated group than the year it was established in 1991 – and the aging population is only expected to grow in the coming decades. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12.4% of the population was 65 year and older in 2000. In 2020, 16.8% was 65 and older. By 2030, the percentage is expected to surpass 20%. At the same time, PACE has grown to try to meet the needs of older citizens. According to the National PACE Association, in 1994 (the founding year of NPA) there were less than 2,000 participants. In 2024, the number swelled to almost 73,000 participants. Read more about the growth of PACE: https://lnkd.in/ewDT8k5e Thanks to 163+ PACE organizations nationwide that support these participants to stay happy and healthy at home and in their communities!

Was reminded of this great quote today. Over the last decade I've seen this behavior from treatment center after treatment center, and the behavior doesn't discriminate from the high end to the community resource. So many programs flounder over today's census without ever picking their head up to figure out a strategy to create a sustainable census. If your headaches of today are the same as they were last January then it's probably time to take a break and develop a sustainable strategy you can apply appropriate tactics to. #salesstrategy #addictiontreatment

In 2020, one-parent families headed by a woman were more likely to be in low income than one-parent families headed by a man. The prevalence of low income was highest among persons in one-parent families headed by an immigrant woman (26.5%). Our most recent study, which uses data from the 2021 Census, employs a gender-based, intersectional approach to examine the prevalence of low income among persons in one-parent families headed by an immigrant parent.
