iHealth Labs had an incredible time giving back to our community at Sunnyvale Community Services. 🤝 Together, we made 650 snack bags for the nutrition program and sorted food for the unhoused pantry. 💪 A big shoutout to our iHealth family who contributed their time and effort to make this happen. Let's continue to spread kindness and support within our community! 🌟 #iHealthInAction

Retired Surgeon | Chair Tri Delta Foundation Board of Trustees | Women's Empowerment | Life Sciences | Committed to transforming national healthcare delivery to ensure quality, accessible, affordable care for all
Title: Transforming Healthcare: The Impact of Better Food and Housing on Preventive Healthcare Boston Medical Center (BMC), New England's largest safety-net hospital, is leading the charge in addressing the root causes of poor health beyond conventional medicine. Since 2001, BMC's Preventive Food Pantry has provided healthy groceries to 7,500 patients monthly. Recognizing the link between housing instability and adverse health outcomes, BMC initiated efforts in 2016 to help medically complex families secure stable housing, resulting in significantly improved health outcomes for children. At BMC's Health Equity Accelerator, housing plays a vital role in preventive medicine. With a $6.5 million investment since 2017, BMC is enhancing community health through more affordable, supportive, and stable housing solutions. Collaborations with Boston Children's Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital have focused on increasing housing stability for vulnerable populations. Additionally, BMC's investment in affordable housing developments will provide sixty supportive housing units for individuals with complex medical needs. These investments, partially funded through the Massachusetts Determination of Need (DoN) process, highlight BMC's commitment to improving community health. During campus renovations in 2017, BMC directed its DoN funding towards expanding Boston's inventory of supportive housing units, solidifying its dedication to health equity. The impact of better housing on preventive healthcare is profound. By addressing housing instability, BMC is transforming healthcare delivery and creating lasting positive outcomes for individuals and communities. As BMC continues to innovate and collaborate, its mission remains steadfast: advancing health equity and ensuring access to resources for all to thrive.
"Our inspiration was to address our food insecure patients, but our greater goal was to create a food-resilient infrastructure in the community we serve. We want to make Boston the healthiest urban population in the world." - David Maffeo, Senior Director of Support Services at BMC At BMC, we're increasing access to nourishing foods for our community by investing in programs such as: 🧑🌾 Our Rooftop Farm, which produces over 4,000 pounds of food every year. 🥬 Our Preventive Food Pantry that serves ~7,000 patients and family members each month. 🍽️ Our Teaching Kitchen offering over 300 medically-tailored classes on cooking healthy meals. Today The Rockefeller Foundation announced an additional $80 million in investment to advance #FoodisMedicine programs in the US. Alongside this funding, we also launched a series of joint commitments in partnership with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to accelerate the adoption of these programs in health systems. Our EVP Elizabeth Yee sat down to discuss this work at todays HHS FIM Summit with Secretary #XavierBecerra of the HHS, and other voices at Instacart, and Feeding America and to explore what it means to pave an equitable and nutritious future for Americans. So proud to be a part of bringing this work to life and thinking about what it means to scale it equitably! As an obesity fighter, I always think about the importance of the right nutrition balance and how this plays a vital role in our overall health and well-being. Here’s some thoughts: 1. Balanced nutrition provides our bodies with essential nutrients that are necessary for proper growth, development, and maintenance of bodily functions. 2. A well-balanced diet rich in nutrients can help prevent various chronic diseases, and supports a strong immune system, reducing the risk of infections. 3. Proper nutrition fuels our bodies with the energy needed to perform daily activities as well as enhancing physical and mental performance, improving concentration and productivity. 4. Adequate nutrition is crucial during infancy, childhood, and adolescence for optimal growth and development. Nutrient-rich foods support healthy brain development, bone growth, and hormonal balance. 5. Weight Management: Good nutrition plays a key role in weight management and body composition. A balanced diet that includes a variety of foods in appropriate portions helps maintain a healthy weight and body mass index. 6. Nutrition impacts mental health and emotional well-being. Certain 7. Environmental Sustainability: Sustainable nutrition practices, e.g. locally sourced foods, can have positive environmental effect by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving water, and preserving biodiversity.
