My heart goes out to everyone impacted by the devastating fires in Los Angeles. The destruction and loss faced by so many are unimaginable and it is my heart hurts for this incredible city. In these moments of crisis, it's inspiring to see organizations stepping up to offer relief and support for music professionals whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted. It's time to get real... This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the WIBC Radiothon for The Salvation Army, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most pivotal years in our history. As many of you know, it’s an election year, which brings about unique dynamics for nonprofits like ours. On one hand, some corporations are stepping up and giving more to support our cause, understanding the heightened need. On the other hand, other companies are facing financial constraints and, unfortunately, cannot renew their sponsorships this year. It’s a time of uncertainty, but what remains constant is the increasing need in our community. The challenges we are seeing are unprecedented. Central Indiana continues to feel the impact of personal disasters and economic strain. Across the U.S., The Salvation Army has responded to over 200 natural disasters this year alone, ranging from hurricanes and wildfires to flooding and tornadoes. These emergencies have stretched resources to their limits, yet the needs of our local community keep growing as well. Families are struggling to make ends meet. Food insecurity, homelessness, and the rising cost of living are putting more people in need of basic services. We’ve witnessed another increase in demand for assistance in Central Indiana, and we know that the work we do is more crucial than ever before. This year, we aim to raise $430,000 through the WIBC Radiothon to meet our budget needs for Central Indiana. These funds provide critical support for services like food, shelter, and programs that help lift families out of poverty. Without meeting this goal, many of these essential services will not be available to everyone that needs them. While the future of this year’s Radiothon fundraising is uncertain, our mission remains clear: to serve those in need. And we need your help to make that possible. Wow, didn't expect to be crying when I logged in to check the company notifications! A great advert by Cats Protection looking ahead to Winter 2024. There has always been an element of judgement when it comes to giving up pets; how often have you heard 'don't have pets if you can't afford them'. Whilst this statement is true, with the sharp rise in the cost of living, what was once an affordable cost, has become unsustainable for many. Thus, due to shame, guilt or even malicious indifference, cat abandonment has increased and continues to increase. If you are unable to look after your pet anymore, please take them to your nearest rescue centre. Cats will not thrive as strays, and rescue centres, whilst seeing an increase in demand, are ready and will not judge if you need to give up your cat for its well-being. If you're in the fortunate position of being able to consider getting a cat, please consider adoption. As the proud owner of a previously abandoned cat, I cannot recommend adoption enough. Rescue centres do vital work, and adoption enables them to help even more cats. #CatsProtection #AllForCats #Adopt

Watching industries step up to support disaster relief, like the LA FireAid benefit show for wildfire victims, has me thinking about the role companies play in making a difference. Whether it's donating, volunteering, or using their platforms to raise awareness, it says a lot about a company’s values. When a devastating tornado hit Joplin, MO in 2011, I participated in a clean-up effort sponsored by my employer, IBM. I'll never forget that experience, it made me think differently about disaster recovery. Does your company get involved in giving back during times of crisis? Now for the second key issue facing Our New York City Dance: Financial Unsustainability for our Workers and Organizations Most dance workers do not earn a living wage from work in dance. Dancers and choreographers earn the least, at $23K per year. To make ends meet, over half our community supplements income with work outside the industry in human service jobs in health/wellness, education, and hospitality. Dance organizations and groups: (1) rely heavily on donated/granted income—a fickle source of income and subject to grantors’ priorities; (2) have limited cash available; and (3) self-report weak financial health. Additionally, 64% of us are paying out of pocket to fund our artistic projects. National public sector arts and culture funding in the U.S. is low compared to other countries, is not keeping pace with inflation, and is often the only source for the needs of underserved communities. How do we get to financial sustainability? By considering our relationship to larger systems, how we interact in community, and activities on a day-to-day level as well as incentivizing those in positions of power to take action.
