Scientific evidence builds slowly. It’s refreshing to see Harvard physicians paying attention and being open to science-based dietary supplements. Even if it’s a small opening. I suspect soon that in addition to multivitamins and vitamin D, Harvard docs will add fiber, omega-3s and a few more key supplements to this list. #Support Research.

Dietary supplements are widely used for health purposes. However, little is known about the metabolic and cardiovascular effects of combinations of popular over-the-counter supplements, each of which has been proposed to have anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and pro-longevity properties in cell culture or animal studies. This study was a 6-month randomized, single-blind controlled trial, in which 56 non-obese (BMI 21.0-29.9 kg/m2) men and women, aged 38 to 55 yr, were assigned to a dietary supplement (SUP) group or control (CON) group, with a 6-month follow-up. The SUP group took 10 dietary supplements each day (100 mg of resveratrol, a complex of 800 mg each of green, black, and white tea extract, 250 mg of pomegranate extract, 650 mg of quercetin, 500 mg of acetyl-l-carnitine, 600 mg of lipoic acid, 900 mg of curcumin, 1 g of sesamin, 1.7 g of cinnamon bark extract, and 1.0 g fish oil). Both the SUP and CON groups took a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement. The main outcome measures were arterial stiffness, endothelial function, biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress, and cardiometabolic risk factors. Twenty-four weeks of daily supplementation with 10 dietary supplements did not affect arterial stiffness or endothelial function in nonobese individuals. These compounds also did not alter body fat measured by DEXA, blood pressure, plasma lipids, glucose, insulin, IGF-1, and markers of inflammation and oxidative stress. Many associations are leveraging modern technology, such as AI, to reach out to consumers and provide education. Here are some examples of their efforts: 1. Websites and social media: Most associations have websites that offer resources for consumers, including articles, infographics, and videos about dietary supplements. They might also use social media platforms to reach a wider audience. 2. Online portals: Some associations have online portals where consumers can access a wealth of information about dietary supplements, from basic information to the latest scientific research. 3. Webinars and online events: Associations often host webinars and online events featuring industry experts, healthcare professionals, and researchers, to educate consumers about various aspects of dietary supplements. 4. AI chatbots: Some associations use AI chatbots on their websites to provide instant answers to consumer questions. These chatbots are programmed with a wealth of information about dietary supplements and can provide responses to common questions 24/7. 5. Media releases: Associations regularly issue media releases to share the latest news and developments in the industry, such as new research findings, regulatory updates, or information about events. While these efforts can go a long way toward educating consumers, it's important to remember that education is a two-way street. Consumers also need to be proactive in seeking out information and asking questions about dietary supplements. Let's work together to promote safety and transparency in the industry.
